Happy Thursday!!

It was a hot and sunny +32C/89F today!

We finished helping my mom plant her garden. We are mostly done planting our garden except for a few more rows of potatoes that we still need to plant.

We see some farmers still seeding their crops, and some crops are already up and growing!

Slow start to the growing season, but hopefully we’ll have a late fall!

Happy Wednesday!!

It’s a hot day today! It feels muggy and the air feels heavy and stodgy!! It is +27C/80F…a hot day to garden for sure.

My daughter found a bee laying on the driveway, not moving, so she picked a dandelion and went to help it. Poor guy! Right away the bee started drinking nectar. We went to the backyard with him. In about 20 minutes, he was able to fly again and went to the other flowers we have in the backyard!

It’s an orange-belted bumblebee. They have black heads, with a few pale yellow hairs. The anterior and posterior thorax and the first and fourth abdominal segments are yellow, the second and third abdominal segments are orange, and the terminal segments are black. The queen and the worker bees look similar but the biggest difference is the size of their fat deposits. Worker bees have very little fat, particularly in their abdomen, leaving plenty of room for the honey stomach, whereas in young queens, the abdomen is largely full of fat.

So interesting!

My daughter watched the bumblebee eat the nectar and when he was ready, he flew off. So neat to see up close!

Happy Monday!

It was a hot and sunny +28C/82F today!!

We were gardening all day, and not quite done yet!

The garlic has grown so much n the past few days!

We decided to get a garden plot at the community garden this year. We planted corn and two rows of potatoes so far. We have a bunch of potatoes and not enough room in our backyard garden so this is super helpful! My goal is to not buy any potatoes all winter long so I need to be sure we grow enough! We will finish planting potatoes this week!

We helped my mom plant her garden this afternoon, and continued planting our backyard garden this evening. I did not realize I had no green beans or yellow beans, so I need to purchase some to plant so we can finish up! It’s lots of work but well worth it! I love gardening!

Even though we are in the city, there’s ways we can still grow our own food - planters/flower pots, garden boxes and even renting a plot at the local community garden is a great start!

Did you plant a garden? What are you growing?

Happy Friday!!

It was a warm and sunny +22C/71F today. We were at my folks’ today out in the country, and all the trees and shrubs are in full bloom!

The Nanking Cherry tree has such beautiful white and pink flowers! Last year was the first year we finally could make jelly with them because nearly every year the blossoms always freeze.

The honeyberry/haskap shrubs are huge at my folks’ - everything grows so well in that soil! The bumblebees and honeybees are busy pollinating - the trees and shrubs are absolutely buzzing!!

I love this time of year!

Need a fast meal using leftovers? Let’s make BBQ Chicken Pita Pizza!

I use leftover chicken or turkey in an assortment of meals like pita pizzas. You can also use leftover English muffins or hamburger buns to make this quick and easy meal!

Happy Tuesday!

We took a gander around the garden this afternoon. Even though we are in the city, I’m sharing what we are doing to produce some food for ourselves.

We have a herb garden. We have a variety of herbs like parsley, basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage and of course chives. The chives are doing great! The chives come back each year. We have two regular chives and a garlic chives. The lady bug was crawling all over the chives! So cute!
The garlic is growing good! We planted the garlic in October and had only one clove not sprout. The thistles are doing exceptionally well too!! We need to pick those pesky weeds!
The Saskatoon sent up new shoots and is flowering! It’s been growing for the last three years - this is the first year that it’s flowering, so I’m super excited to have some saskatoon berries!
The cherry tree is starting to flower now.
The chokecherry is starting to flower as well.
The apple tree just starting to flower too! Yay!
And lastly, the plum tree is doing very well. This tree has three varieties grafted on it. One variety has just started to leaf out now and has no blossoms yet. In the third last photo you can see the other two types of plums that are flowering because the flowers are actually different. They’re so fragrant and smells divine!
We purchased some tomatoes, and different pepper plants. We’ll be planting those this weekend.
The rhubarb is doing good. We have four plants - one finally just sprouted, two are doing pretty good and my main rhubarb that I’ve had for six years (transplanted twice), is growing the best.
The black currant and josta berry (second last photo) are leafing out nicely.
The honeyberries/haskap shrubs in the front are doing very good. These two we have had for six years as well. They’re flowering and the bees love them!
The honeyberries/haskap shrubs in the backyard are not doing so well but the critters decided to scalp all the bark from them this winter. We will trim them back and hopefully they’ll come back to life!
The gooseberry is growing well despite the critters enjoying its bark and the blueberries are not only leafing out but also flowering too!

It’s quite a slow start this spring, but everything is growing so well!

I’m looking forward to all the different fruits and veggies this year!

How’s your garden?

Happy Sunday!!

Here’s a butterfly update… Well, most of the caterpillars have made their chrysalis now. They’ll be like this for the next 7 to 10 days. Then, they’ll begin to emerge! So exciting!

Happy Wednesday!!

The plum tree is flowering beautifully but I’m definitely worried since temperatures are supposed to go below zero later this week!! Bees were at the flowers all day yesterday!

The caterpillars are starting to form a j-shape which then they turn themselves into a chrysalis. It took under 10 minutes for him to form his chrysalis!! So cool!!
