Happy Tuesday!
We took a gander around the garden this afternoon. Even though we are in the city, I’m sharing what we are doing to produce some food for ourselves.
We have a herb garden. We have a variety of herbs like parsley, basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage and of course chives. The chives are doing great! The chives come back each year. We have two regular chives and a garlic chives. The lady bug was crawling all over the chives! So cute!
The garlic is growing good! We planted the garlic in October and had only one clove not sprout. The thistles are doing exceptionally well too!! We need to pick those pesky weeds!
The Saskatoon sent up new shoots and is flowering! It’s been growing for the last three years - this is the first year that it’s flowering, so I’m super excited to have some saskatoon berries!
The cherry tree is starting to flower now.
The chokecherry is starting to flower as well.
The apple tree just starting to flower too! Yay!
And lastly, the plum tree is doing very well. This tree has three varieties grafted on it. One variety has just started to leaf out now and has no blossoms yet. In the third last photo you can see the other two types of plums that are flowering because the flowers are actually different. They’re so fragrant and smells divine!
We purchased some tomatoes, and different pepper plants. We’ll be planting those this weekend.
The rhubarb is doing good. We have four plants - one finally just sprouted, two are doing pretty good and my main rhubarb that I’ve had for six years (transplanted twice), is growing the best.
The black currant and josta berry (second last photo) are leafing out nicely.
The honeyberries/haskap shrubs in the front are doing very good. These two we have had for six years as well. They’re flowering and the bees love them!
The honeyberries/haskap shrubs in the backyard are not doing so well but the critters decided to scalp all the bark from them this winter. We will trim them back and hopefully they’ll come back to life!
The gooseberry is growing well despite the critters enjoying its bark and the blueberries are not only leafing out but also flowering too!
It’s quite a slow start this spring, but everything is growing so well!
I’m looking forward to all the different fruits and veggies this year!
How’s your garden?
