Happy Saturday!

It was a little snowy today! We picked the oregano, chives and mint as well as a few jalapeños, raspberries and strawberries.

To warm up, we made fresh bread and a delicious pot of split pea and ham soup which I used a ham bone and cooked it most of the day. It was delicious on this chilly day!

We finished the last of the cabbage rolls! These are ground beef, onion and rice. After we rolled them, we froze them to enjoy later!! I’m looking forward to fresh cabbage rolls! They’re one of my favorites!!

Happy Monday!!

I feel like my days are all running together, we’ve been so busy!

Today I trimmed some mint — the mint is so unruly even though I’ve already trimmed it. I trimmed quite a bit of it again today and will trim more layer this week! I’ll be drying the mint for tea.

We trimmed all the sunflowers and now the heads are drying so we can harvest the seed. That was quite the job!

And we have two pieces of asparagus we can harvest and eat! The rest we need to let dry before trimming it back for the winter.

I just have some more chives to trim, oregano and the rest of the dill once it finishes going to seed as well as the mint and we are basically done harvesting the garden for this year!!

I’m glad the weather has been nice enough for us to finish! It was a beautiful +23C/73F today!!

Happy Monday!!

Today we finished harvesting the garden!! We got one mini corn cob that we can eat and the rest did not develop kernels (too late in the year to do so), but we will see if we are able to use them for seed next year!

Pansies are still so pretty.

Happy Thursday!!

We made and canned some Sweet Mix Pickles and Caramel Applesauce as well as apple juice and pear juice.
We also dug up more potatoes! Hopefully we’ll get the last of the garden out this weekend!

🧡 Honouring those who survived Residential Schools and those who did not. 🧡

Our City Homestead is all about history and food history and how our ancestors and the early settlers of the past once lived. With this comes the acknowledgment and honour of our Indigenous Peoples and heritage. I have learned a lot from both my Indigenous & Métis friends and use that knowledge to share with others. My great grandmother was “American Indian” so I have that respect and that little piece with me always.

Our City Homestead acknowledges that we are situated within Treaty Six Territory, the ancestral and modern-day territories of the Nêhiyawak (Plains Cree), Denesuline (Dene), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy), Anishinaabe (Saulteaux / Ojibway), and Nakota Isga (Nakota Sioux) Peoples.
We honour our neighbouring Nations of Maskwacîs — Ermineskin Cree Nation, Samson Cree Nation, Louis Bull Tribe, and Montana First Nation — as well as the Enoch Cree Nation, whose name maskêkosihk means “people of the land of medicine.”
We also recognize that Leduc is within the Homeland of the Métis Nation.
We recognize the land and waters that sustain our community, and we honour the generations who have lived in relationship with this place. Treaty Six is a living covenant, founded on relationship, respect, and shared responsibility. We commit to listening, learning, and acting in ways that respect Indigenous sovereignty, lands, histories, languages, knowledge systems, and cultures, and to advancing meaningful reconciliation through our work together.

Happy Tuesday!

Yesterday, we made applesauce (we like leaving it full of apple pieces) and canned three jars.
We also made a batch of pear jam with the last of the pears we had from the market. We got 8 - 237ml jars.

We had a delicious corn and potato soup with cheesy chive dumplings and there was a lovely sunset this evening.

Hopefully tomorrow we can get some more canning done!!!
