What does it mean to be Canadian?
For me, it’s personal. I was born in British Columbia, studied in Nova Scotia, married an American, and became a father in Tokyo—before returning to Montreal to build a new chapter. Each of those places shaped who I am, but it’s being Canadian that made it all possible.
Canada gave me the freedom to move, to learn, to raise a family, and to tell stories—first as a journalist for the public broadcaster, now as a designer and founder trying to reflect this country’s complexity through art. It’s not perfect. No country is. But I believe in the core idea: that strength comes from diversity, and that opportunity should be shared.
There’s no single way to be Canadian. Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or carry your Canadian identity abroad, whether your roots go back generations or you just arrived yesterday—this place makes space for your story.
As a father, I’m constantly reminded of how lucky we are. Canada gives my daughter the chance to grow up in a country where her identity is not just accepted, but embraced. That, to me, is the promise of Canada.
Wishing you a meaningful Canada Day—from our family to yours.
