September in the Living Garden Subscription is all about the cool-season comeback — planting a little for now, and a lot for what comes next.

🥬 Overwintering spinach
🧅 Overwintering scallions
🌸 Echinacea
🌼 Yarrow
🌻 Rudbeckia

The spinach and scallions head into the colder months with a head start, while the perennials begin building the backbone of next year’s garden.

September gardening is less about instant gratification and more about setting things in motion.

Plant now. Let winter do some of the work. Watch the garden wake up differently in spring.

🧄 Why do we plant garlic in the fall?

Garlic is one of those crops that fits remarkably well into a Canadian kitchen garden.

We plant individual cloves in the fall, giving them time to establish roots before winter. The cold period helps trigger proper bulb development, and when spring arrives the plants are ready to get growing early. By summer, one clove has become an entire bulb.

For a crop that asks for relatively little garden space, that is a pretty fantastic return. Garlic stores well after curing, gets used constantly in the kitchen, and you can save some of your best bulbs to plant again the following fall.

Garlic has also travelled with people for thousands of years.

As people moved, traded, settled in new places and brought their food traditions with them, garlic came too. It was practical to grow, easy to use, easy to store, and valuable enough to keep planting year after year.

That same pattern eventually became part of Canadian kitchen gardens too. Families brought varieties and growing traditions with them, and garlic settled in very comfortably here.

Plant in fall, harvest in summer, keep some for the kitchen and save some for next year.

There’s a reason this crop has stuck around for so long. 🧄🌱

Chelsea’s Garden Edible Collection 🌱

The kitchen garden does not have to begin and end with summer.

The Chelsea’s Garden Edible Collection is a seasonal subscription created to help Canadian gardeners plant, protect, and harvest throughout the year.

Each shipment follows what the edible garden needs next and may include:

🥕 Vegetable, herb and edible-flower seeds
🧄 Garlic and seasonal planting material
🍓 Roots, crowns and tubers
🌱 Season-extension supplies
🪴 Useful garden pieces

The collection moves through four distinct growing moments:

Fall brings garlic, cold-loving greens and frost protection to help stretch the growing season.

Winter begins long-season crops indoors with curated seeds, a Chelsea’s Garden sowing journal and a handmade Trev Creates propagation station.

Spring fills the garden with strawberries, seed potatoes, peas, greens, roots, herbs and edible flowers.

Summer helps manage heat, harvest what is ready and plant the next round for cooler days ahead.

The exact contents may change as the seasons, suppliers and gardens guide the collection—but every shipment will maintain its purpose, usefulness and value.

Your subscription begins with the next available shipment. 🌱
