Ricardo didn’t lack ideas.
He had Pinterest boards full of them.
What he needed was a way to turn all those individual things he liked into a room that actually felt like his.
He’d moved into a new home in Airdrie with furniture that was heavy, dark and better suited to the house he’d left behind. This one needed to work for entertaining, family celebrations and ordinary evenings at home.
The dining room began with a carob-stained trestle table that seats six day to day but extends to ten when everyone comes over.
Rather than buying the matching chair set, we used tufted turquoise chairs and re-covered the backs of the host chairs in an embroidered Robert Allen fabric so they read as their own pair. A large painted landscape nods to Ricardo’s love of the ocean.
With Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s a useful reminder:
A dining room has to work for the big dinners—and the ordinary Tuesdays when nobody is coming over.
Good furnishing isn’t about filling a room. It’s about giving the way you live somewhere to happen.
What’s one room in your home that works beautifully for company—but not nearly as well on an ordinary Tuesday?
