All things considered, we were pretty lucky, only minimal damage. Amazing how much stuff you accumulate in 5.5 years… my goal is to be more mindful about what I bring in and keep in the new studio… once I find one…

About Sophie

My interest in ceramics started fairly late and then it took even longer before I first learned how to make pots. I grew up in Belgium, moved to London when I was 19 to learn English and some years later moved to Leeds where I got a degree in Industrial Design. I’ve always had a passion for design and for making things. As a child I used to take things apart and assemble random things together. Right after university I moved to Toronto to work in an industrial design studio and loved it but after working as an industrial designer for many years, I felt a little disconnected from the things I designed. I enjoyed the process, the model making and prototyping but the final product was always made somewhere else. I admired people who made things by hand and dreamed of doing that some day. I also loved buying ceramics! especially bowls. There’s something comforting about eating out of a bowl, and even more so if it was made by hand. When I moved to Vancouver, and work was slow, I finally decided to take a pottery class and got hooked on the first day! I loved that I was able to take a lump of clay and turn it into something one can use and enjoy, although it did take a while before it stopped looking like just a lump of clay with a hole in it…

I’m excited about making things, trying new techniques, experimenting with glazes but what brings me the most joy is knowing that someone will hold something I made and enjoy using it. So if have something I made and are enjoying it, thank you!
