Spent a couple of days experimenting on Dura-lar (a type of plastic film like Mylar). Tried out a monochromatic palette, all reds in this one—and threw in some real gold too.

Experimentation keeps my energy up and gives me a chance to try out things that may appear in larger work.

Spring is so welcome. Went out for my first bike ride this morning to soak up the sights. I love an old fence, blossoms (not lots up here) and a good lens flare.

I’ll take this experience into the studio and see where it takes me.

Painting can be hard work, but this part of the job never feels tough.

I’m still buzzing from our opening last night. The room was packed, the energy was incredible. (I was too busy meeting people to take photos—but I’ve been sharing other people’s on my stories.)

I couldn’t be happier with the curation, how .bee found new relationships between my pieces, as well as with the work of the other artists.

Heartfelt thanks to for giving our show a home. Visit their Insta for opening night photos.

Paint is incredible stuff. Each pigment from synthetic reds to earthy ochres behaves a little differently. They even dry differently, and fall out of solution at different rates.

Today I was struck by the beauty of the takeout containers, pie trays, and lids I use to mix colour. Which one’s your favourite?

How much do I love mixing colour? Well, my mouth waters, I grin like a crazy person, and when I have a nice colour puzzle—like trying to match that muted purple-pink on the left of the painting—I feel completely energized.

I don’t plan my colours. I don’t pre-mix. It’s something I know in my bones from my graphic design work.

I do quick tests on leftover canvas strips when I think I’m getting warm. Mostly they’re messy but the one I’m holding is lovely.

Some smaller pieces are starting to come together. Reassuring and exciting.

I often plunge straight in to big pieces, but this time I’m working my way up, starting with this 18x18 painting in progress. I’ve started some 24s, and a 36, easing in and up. Can’t wait to get to the big guys in the corner, but slowly this time, like I’m sneaking up on them.

Happy Friday!

While I’m busy prepping canvases and beginning a batch of new paintings I thought I’d take a moment to honour an experiment that didn’t work out.

This one had some lovely moments, but the overall composition just would not come together. So today I took photos, made some notes, and rolled it up.

Finished work I bring to a show or offer for sale is merely the tip of the iceberg.

Back at it, finding my way in the studio. Prepping canvases, sketching, seeing if I can reconnect with canvases I’d already started.

I’m loving this peachy pink against lilac and yellow green. Dreaming of Spring…

This is a distilled way of describing what, why and how I paint.

The work is shaped by close looking, a cultivated attention, and a fascination with natural systems—how they move, adapt, and hold both beauty and harshness, delicacy and power, all in a precarious balance.

If you’ve ever felt slowed down or quietly energized by my paintings, this is the ground they come from.
