we changed our long weekend plans just so we could make it to the closing night of your movie, because it wasn’t showing in our small community. It’s the least I can do because I’m pretty sure you’ve saved my daughter’s life more than once, and my daughter is really fu***ng rad. Thanks for sharing your art.

This installation plays on the wonder + chaos of birthday parties and all they entail: sights, sounds, sensations. Eyes on you. Unspoken expectations. Events that can illicit immense joy and intense stress, sometimes simultaneously. We have had birthday parties where no one is allowed to sing. Ones where we don’t open any presents until after everyone has left. Parties that involved many lists and weeks of mental prep. Attending parties as a guest that required checking out the new friend’s home ahead of time, to make sure it felt comfortable. There are so many unseen elements in something as “simple” as this annual celebration. This piece started with inflated balloons and they have since all burst, which I love and feels fitting.
