Some days we see the vision.🤍
Some days we just see the mess.😵‍💫

I love sharing the pretty details of our downsized custom home, but this is part of the story too.

My husband putting in long hours. Me questioning a paint colour for the hundredth time. Cleaning a garage door because it’s the one thing I can control. 😂 And both of us picking up drywall remnants when we’d much rather be done for the day.

There’s mud, dust, stuff everywhere, and a whole lot of work between “I design it. He builds it.” and actually moving in.

We’re grateful we get to do this. We’re also tired, overwhelmed at times, and very ready to live in the house we’ve poured so much into.

A completely made-up holiday, but I stand behind it. 😂

If you have a friend who loves home design, is building or renovating, or enjoys watching a couple try to finish a house without losing their minds… we might be their people. 🤭

And yes, I included instructions on how to share a post… Mostly for my husband ☺️🤍

He can build an entire house, but sending an Instagram post requires a tutorial. 😅

She’s in and she’s gorgeous. My inner voice has not stopped screaming.

New here? My husband and I are building our custom downsized dream home. This diamond pattern checkerboard tile just went down in our entryway, and after months of staring at subfloor, it feels like we’re finally in the home stretch.

We started with a budget and a shared commitment to sticking to it. Adorable. 😂

If you’re new here, we’re building our sixth home, a downsized custom home in Ontario. My husband is the budget builder. I’m the YOLO Pinterest dreamer who somehow finds the most expensive thing in every showroom. I consider that a talent. He does not. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Usually, he reminds me of the budget and I explain why the pretty thing deserves a place in it.

But occasionally, the budget builder goes off script… like deciding every toilet needs to be a smart toilet with a bidet.

Suddenly, “well, YOU got the toilets” becomes a perfectly reasonable argument for Taj Mahal quartzite. Your Honour, I rest my case. 😂

We always find a compromise. Mine occasionally involves suggesting we postpone the driveway to afford all the pretty light fixtures. Who needs pavement when you have ambiance? 🤪

Now that we’re nearing the end, we’re both so tired of comparing prices and making decisions that our shared financial strategy is becoming: “Just order it.”

HomeSense had me picking out pumpkins for a house that still needs baseboards. The audacity. 🎃😂

Building a house requires a lot of patience… especially for a girl who’s ready to decorate every room before she can live in any of them.

Surely we’ll be in by Christmas… right? 🎄😅

We downsized the house… not the vision. 🤍

I design it, my husband builds it, and together we’re creating a custom home that feels like us in every square foot.

These before and after clips make the progress look quick, but there have been a whole lot of decisions (and a few plot twists 😂) between each one. We’re still in the middle of it, and I’m already loving seeing the plans come to life.

It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else.🤍

When I shared that we were taking the kitchen cabinets all the way up to the 9-foot ceilings in our downsized custom home, people had thoughts. 😂 Some loved it; others would have stopped them lower.

The kitchen isn’t finished yet, but we’re loving how it’s coming together. The extra storage and that floor-to-ceiling look were exactly what we wanted, and I’m glad we went with what felt right for our home!
