A little August long weekend reminder from somewhere beyond the reach of our inbox:

The Farmer’s Son Co. Shoppe remains closed this week while we take a few days to rest, recharge and enjoy as much summer as possible before our busy season begins.

We’ll be back in our West End Winnipeg shoppe on Saturday, August 8th, refreshed, ready to see you and probably still carrying a faint trace of campfire.

Until then, online orders are still welcome and will be packed once we return.

Hi friend,

We’ve decided the best business decision we can make this week is…leaving.

No meetings. No candle pours. No late night product setup, website fixes, supply chain conversations and email inquiries. No “just one quick thing before we head home.”

Just the dogs, our paddle boards, a case of wine, stories, laughter, more food than we’ll know what to do with, mornings on the lake, campfires and our favourite people.

It’s been a whirlwind year, both personally and professionally for Rory and I, and we’re taking this coming week to disappear into the woods so that we can enjoy a bit of summer (and all the things we love about this time of year) before readying for our busy season (did I mention that we start pouring holiday candles on August 11th?).

Thank you for continuing to support our Winnipeg shoppe, our studio and the work we create. Every visit, every order and every kind word has helped us build something we’re incredibly proud of! The FSCo. Shoppe will be closed August 1–7. We’ll be back August 8th, recharged, slightly more tanned and probably smelling a bit like campfire (which is never a bad thing).

Every year I try to convince myself that this'll be the summer where life slows down a little.

And yet, every year, it somehow becomes even busier.

For the summer issue of Style Manitoba, I wrote a short piece about what a Manitoba summer looks like around these parts; gardens that never seem to stop growing (or need weeding), weekends that disappear too quickly, dinners outside, and Rory's and my annual attempt to squeeze about six months of living into 12 weeks of warm weather.

I think of it as a little love letter to summer on the prairies, and if you've ever wondered where July went before August even arrived, you may see a bit of yourself in it.

It feels like the hottest day of a prairie summer.

The kind of heat that settles into the earth, bakes into the cedar and refuses to lift when the sun finally begins to drop. By evening, the air is humid, sticky and oh so thick. Clothes cling before they’re pulled away. The sauna door closes, water strikes the stones and steam begins to flood the room.

Warm cedarwood, white oak and to***co leaf deepen in the heat. Black pepper sharpens the air. Amber, oakmoss and leather settle close to the body as sweat beads across flushed skin and slowly moves downward.

The sauna gets quieter. Breathing gets heavier. The cedar swells with steam. Damp towels are abandoned. Outside, the night waits. Inside, nobody seems interested in cooling down.

Sauna was made to smell like that moment. Think hot wood, slick skin, the air heavy and the primal instinct to stay until the heat becomes almost unbearable.

Deep, humid and feral around the edges, Sauna carries the heat of the day long after dark.

We still have a huge collection of past season holiday decor, stemware, gourmet flavours & confectionery, a selection of spring and discontinued candles, second garden tools, books, testers, vintage, styling props and other odds & sods.

We’ve been restocking, rearranging, taking further markdowns (we just want this stuff gone so we can bring in even more new finds this holiday season) and adding more as we work through our warehouse, so there’s still a mountain of treasures to discover both in shoppe and online.
