We’re right in the thick of pre-holiday production over here, trying to get ahead of autumn and the cozy season coming at us fast.

Since Tuesday, I’ve poured just over 1300 of our much-loved Manitoba Pine and Frasier Fir candles. I just want to feel ready for the season ahead (it’s a new concept for Rory and I). Nine at a time. Hand blended, hand stirred, hand poured, then labelled, cleaned, clipped, wrapped and boxed.

That’s the reality of a small creative business like ours. Part sourced, part handmade, all a little chaotic.

No giant production line. Just me, nine candles at a time, taking a very strategic break to share this with you!

Ten years of Farmer’s Son Co.

There’s no version of this story that belongs only to just Rory and I. Every candle or bottle of incense carried home, every order placed, every visit to our Winnipeg shoppe, every friend told, every message sent (oh so many!), every return visit and every person who chose to spend a little of their time or money with us helped make this possible.

Some of you have been here almost from the beginning (we see you, we love you!). Some found us last week (welcome to the chaos!). Some have watched Farmer’s Son Co. evolve from a candle studio into something much broader, and trusted us enough to keep coming along for the ride.

Thank you for giving our artistry and treasures a place in your homes, for letting our fragrances become part of your memories, for wandering our shoppe, for supporting the things we craft and the finds we believe are worth sharing.

We know there are a lot of places you can shop and a lot of things competing for your attention. The fact that you continue to choose this little studio of ours means more than we can properly put into words. You’ve changed our lives, and for that, we’re forever grateful.

Ten years is a long time.

Happy Thursday friend!

There’s been a flurry of activity around our shoppe these past few days. Deliveries coming in from both near and far, with treasures from across Canada and around the world landing almost nonstop.

Good chocolate doesn’t have to be serious my friend!

One of our favourite discoveries over the past year for the Farmer’s Son Co. shoppe has been Jumbo, a chocolate range from the Netherlands made with Belgian chocolate, 100% cocoa butter and cocoa sourced through Tony’s Open Chain.

The quality is there first, but what really drew us in were the flavour combinations: Brownie & Raspberry, Coffee & Cookie, Caramel & Speculoos, Cheesecake, Blueberry & Almond, Pretzel, Cinnamon & Almond, Crunchy Meringue & Lemon and Spicy Crisp.

Interesting, thoughtful and just playful enough.

That’s very much how we view chocolate at Farmer’s Son Co. We want it to be well crafted, but we also want it to make you curious. Something you haven’t necessarily seen before. Something worth passing around the table and talking about.

We’re also pretty pleased to be one of only a handful of shoppes in Canada offering the Jumbo range.

Known for their rich, decadent caramels, La Lichée makes the kind of caramel that feel genuinely special (we're talking the good stuff...like someone's granny used to make). They're beautifully balanced, deeply flavourful and are small batch crafted with an obvious attention to quality.

We’re very happy to have a new Canadian-made range joining our shoppe shelves.

No.7 Mexican Hot Sauce Inc. was started in Toronto by husband-and-wife team Carlos and Sandra Flores, growing out of a family recipe and their Café Con Leche coffee shop. More than a decade later, they’re still making their sauces in small batches, drawing on Mexican flavours and recipes while building a distinctly Canadian small business of their own.

We’ve started with their Chipotle, Habanero Original, Habanero Peach and Piri Piri and Canadian Maple hot sauces alongside their Canadian Maple Blueberry BBQ Sauce.

We’ve been having a lot of fun expanding the food / flavour side of FSCo., and this is exactly the kind of range we want to make room for: Canadian-made, full of flavour and with a story behind it. We’re very happy to welcome No.7 to Farmer’s Son Co.!

Look what’s sitting on the tables of my lab.

Grasslands.

Wild brome grass, cottonwood and clover. Big blue skies, wide-open plains and wind moving through a sea of wild grasses. It’s my interpretation of the a Manitoba pasture or backroad come late summer. after years of making it and thousands poured, this is still of the fragrances that feels most like home to me. It’s my backroads. The land I grew up on.

I wasn’t entirely sure I’d get to make it again.

We wound down sourcing from across the border and have tried to rebuild a significant part of our supply chain with Canadian suppliers and new partners in Europe, Asia and through Latin & South America.

At the same time, I’ve been working through the raw materials we already had in our possession. Fragrance is so damn expensive to begin with - we’ve had to be resourceful and get creative along the way.

Tucked away in my collection of bottles was just enough of one very specific / rare component I need to make Grasslands.

So, Shannon and I crafted 135 of them for you to enjoy. 🌾

This is where the impact of tariffs and changing trade relationships gets a little more complicated for a small studio / shoppe like ours.

I’m a fragrance designer first & chandler second. A new Farmer’s Son Co. fragrance can take me six months to a year to develop (sometimes longer). I work with individual notes & accords, test them in our wax, adjusting & continuing until I’m happy with the story I want to share with you.

If a component is no longer available, I can’t just pour something else from a jug and call it the same.

Sometimes I can reformulate. Sometimes I can find a new source. And sometimes I have to accept that an accord I love might need more time to figure out.

After hand-pouring tens of thousands of candles over the past decade, there are fragrances I’ve been perfectly happy to retire.

Grasslands isn’t one of them. It’s perfect.

So I’m pretty damn happy to have a small batch available for the folks who’ve loved.

September 1st.

My mom took this photo in early September of 1978. She would have been 17, had graduated high school a year early, and somewhere along a Manitoba backroad beneath that enormous prairie sky, she saw something worth stopping for.

A quiet road. Fields. That big cloud-filled sky. The particular light of early September, when summer’s still kind of lingering, but the season’s very much beginning to turn.

She carried a 35mm camera through much of my childhood, documenting our life on the farm and the beauty she found along the Manitoba and Saskatchewan backroads we travelled. Bouncing across fields in old grain trucks, riding the tractor, walking fence lines to make sure the cows were staying in. She captured the pastures, gravel roads, old buildings, changing skies, fields and everyday moments that made up the world around us.

She noticed the ordinary places so many of us pass without really seeing.

She saw them.

I have a small collection of her photographs from the late ’70s and ’80s, and they’re among my most treasured possessions. Looking through them, I see the world through her eyes and recognize how much of the way I see it came from her.

She taught me to pay attention. To the light, the landscape, the season and the feeling of a particular moment.

As I’ve been holed up in my lab preparing for autumn, I’ve found myself returning to these photographs as I work on new new ideas; trying to lean into the creativity of what I do. There’s something incredibly special about finding inspiration in a moment my 17-year-old mom thought was beautiful enough to stop and capture.

Her eye, her creativity and her way of seeing the world are still quietly finding their way into mine.
