Deep, deep in the jungles of the Congo, back when the world was little bit younger, there lived two Bonobos. Incidentally, as the two bonobos were swinging from their vines, one plummeted to his demise as he was impaled on a forest branch right between the eyes.

The first bonobo mourned his companion. Each year he would return; when he did, he would find the body of the erstwhile ape is progressive states of decay. First, the flesh fell off, and the bone was smoothed to an almost translucent hue in the sun; the gooey parts of the ape melted out, especially the brains, and where replaced with rainwater about halfway up in the skull; the tree beach that killed him hollowed out to leave a thick straw atop which some very special herbs happened to fall the morning of when the bonobo came to visit the grave.

That afternoon, lightning struck the herbs as the second ape approached. Out of the type of curiosity that would engender human speech and the wheel, this bonobo decided to smoke the smoke of the herb through the second hole in the first monkey’s head.

That is hot he story of the first smoking Lamps, which our founder, Josiah Lamp, found during an expedition to find it, and is currently displayed at the Union Square Lamp Company.

Our founder, Josiah Lamp, designed the Smoking Lamp Miniature at the behest of his favorite prostitutes in the Tenderloin district. Often during his frequent visits would they complain that the sheer girth of the Smoking Lamp Original was too much for their dainty hands to handle.

Josiah then opened a popup shop on the corner of 28th and 6th, distributing Minis to every Lady of the Night that crossed his path after dusk. Soon enough, the women were able to hook passing Sailors and other riffraff from the Bowery simply by lighting their lamps outside popular dance halls. The men who found women this way were called “firefly f**kers” by the local precincts.

Vittolio Martinelli was a trailblazer in organic Smoking Lamps. Having emigrated from Italy to Northern California with only two apples in his pocket, he ate the least rotten one and carved the other into a lamp that we sold to a prospector outside of Bakersfield.

Soon enough, Martinelli had expanded into over a dozen types of apples, green, red, yellow, it concerns over the shelf stability of old, carved fruit led him East, to our founder, Josiah Lamp. Josiah encouraged Vittolio to retain the original apple shape, as well as to add the leaf motifs, but to use the same high-quality industrial glass that the Union Square Lamp Company had pioneered.

The new and improved Apple Lamps were a resounding success, both for for their artistic flair as well as their compact functionality (the handheld size of these lamps made them a favorite of the Pullman Rail workers in Chicago to hurl at the anti-Union military force). Once Vilttlio died unexpectedly due to owning many exotic and feral beasts in his two-bedroom apartment, Josiah and the USLC became the sole authorized purveyors of the Martinelli Apple Lamps, which it remains to this day.

“LAMPING isn’t EVERYTHING; is the ONLY thing”

These immortal words were coined by our founder, Josiah Lamp, during the first England-Italy “Footie” match in 1859. Its was an exhibition game at the Meadowlands, and was, in fact, rather lackluster for to both sides having been (literally) decimated during the recent Crimean War.

Nevertheless, it was Josiah’s relentless heckling from the solves that produced enough enthusiasm for the game to tally on and soon spread in popularity across the continents.
