Chapter 15: Cards, Dares... and Unexpected Confessions

“First, we play cards,” I began, explaining my idea. “The loser becomes the seeker for the next round. After the others hide, the first person found must choose between a dare or a truth—given by the person who won the card game.”

I glanced around, hoping they understood, ready to clarify if needed.

Instead, I was met with wide-eyed, dumbfounded expressions.

“I didn’t know you were this smart, girl,” Stacy said, eyes sparkling.

“What a skillful brain, I must admit,” Karl added with a proud grin.

“You’re not only beautiful, but also clever, intelligent, wise, and—wow… what can I say… you’re just… umm—” Jason trailed off, obviously flirting now.

Megan rolled her eyes. “Jeez, Jason. You’re only praising her because you’re obsessed with games.”

We all laughed.

---

William’s POV

The combination of all three games was genius. Once we’d all agreed on the rules, we began.

In the first round, Stacy won the card game. Karl lost.

Karl wandered around and ended up finding Steven.

Stacy’s eyes sparkled mischievously as she looked at her brother. “Truth or dare, bro?”

Steven groaned. “If I say truth, you’ll ask me questions you’ve been dying to get answers to… so, I’ll take dare.”

Stacy grinned wider. “Excellent choice. Here, take this bandage—let me blindfold you.”
She paused. “Now everyone, go hide and silently form a circle around him.”

Steven froze. “What are you planning to do?”

“Patience, bro—it’s a virtue,” she said, matter-of-factly. “You’re now in the center of seven people. I’m not one of them—obviously. I’m your sister. With your eyes covered, walk in any direction and kiss the first person you find. No talking, no sound allowed.”

“What the hell? What if I kiss a guy?” Steven panicked.

Stacy shrugged. “Not my problem. Or do you prefer five hot slaps on each cheek by eight people? That’s 80 slaps, bro.”

“Okay, okay—I’ll do it,” Steven replied, utterly defeated.

I was curious to see how he’d handle it.

He walked around slowly, sniffing people like a confused bloodhound. We stifled our laughter. He stopped in front of Megan, his face brightening even through the blindfold. Then, to everyone’s surprise, he cupped her cheeks and kissed her—passionately—without hesitation. After a moment, he pulled off the blindfold with a huge smile.

Lea and Britney both gasped.

“How did you know it was me?” Megan asked, clearly amazed.

Steven’s reply was instant: “That’s easy, babe. Even in the night, with no moonlight, in the darkest depths—I’d still recognize you, sweetheart.”

Megan laughed, blushing. “Are you a poet now?”

“For you,” he said, grinning stupidly, “I’ll be whatever you want me to be.”

“We’ve heard enough of that,” Max interrupted, rolling his eyes.

---

Next round. Jason won. Stacy lost and ended up finding Max, who chose truth.

“Do you have a crush on someone?” Jason asked, raising an eyebrow.

Max shot a glance at Lea—quick but obvious to anyone paying attention. “Yes,” he replied.

“Who?” Jason asked.

“Only one question,” Max reminded with a smirk.

I won the next round. Megan lost and found Karl. He picked dare.

Perfect timing.

“Declare your flame to the girl you like,” I said, giving him a knowing look. Maybe this was the nudge he needed.

“How do we know he’s actually going to do it?” Max teased. “He could lie—especially if she’s not here.”

“Who said she’s not here?” Megan chuckled mysteriously.

“Wait—what? Who?” Max asked, eyes bouncing between Stacy and Britney.

Karl looked nervous. He took two deep breaths. Stacy didn’t say a word, but her smile had shifted—softer now.

Karl stepped in front of her.

“I never imagined I’d confess my feelings like this,” he began, voice slightly shaky, “but I’d rather risk embarrassment than suffer 80 slaps.”

We all laughed, easing the tension in the room.

“I don’t know exactly when I started feeling this way,” he continued, “but now that I do, I don’t want the feelings to disappear. I meant to tell you sooner, but I was afraid of your reaction.”

He looked directly into Stacy’s eyes.

“I like everything about you—your good sides and even your flaws. Even those terrible jokes you make.” He laughed nervously. “I’m sorry I hid it from you. But… Stacy Peterson, will you be my girlfriend?”

She leaned in and whispered something only he could hear, then smiled and said aloud, “Yes. I accept.”

“Karl, I said confess not propose,” I joked.

He shot me a look and mouthed, Shut up.

We all burst into laughter again.

Chapter 14: The Tease Before the Dare

“Already done? That was quick,” Karl said as he noticed us coming down the stairs.

“I think you meant you were so engrossed, you didn’t even notice time flying,” Stacy said, flopping down between Karl and Steven, right in the middle. Her gaze slid to the screen, then back to Karl. “Mind if I play?” she asked sweetly, then turned abruptly to Steven, making sure he didn’t notice her teasing Karl.
Have I told you my friend was in love with her brother's best friend? Just like him with her best friend. We all sat down.

“If you don’t mind,” Max said, standing up, “we’ll leave you elders here. Lea and I are going to my room.”

William narrowed his eyes. “And what exactly are you going to do with my sister in your room?” he asked, face flat and entirely devoid of humor.

“Have some fun,” Max replied with an innocent expression that was clearly meant to provoke Will.

“That’s my brother,” Jason grinned, excitedly pointing a finger at Max like he’d just earned a badge of honor.

We all turned to look at him.

He shrugged. “What?”

Will refocused on Max, dead serious. “What do you mean by fun?”

Max answered in a deceptively pure tone, “Actually, I was thinking of watching a thriller—our favorite genre. Since you guys are using the sitting room…” Then, with a cheeky smirk, he added, “Or did you have another idea of how we could have more fun?”

“Brat,” Will mouthed under his breath.

Watching his face slowly turn red with irritation made us all snicker. Max was poking the bear—and enjoying it way too much.

“Can you guys stop this nonsense already?” Lea snapped, clearly annoyed. She turned toward both her brother and Max, arms crossed. “Don’t you feel even a little embarrassed talking rubbish like this in front of the girls? Seriously.”

“Sorry,” Max said, not looking sorry at all. “But it was worth it. Your brother and you love to bully me. Flipping the roles was… refreshing.”

If looks could kill, Max would’ve dropped on the spot. Both Will and Lea were practically shooting daggers at him.

“Okay, okay—calm down, you two,” Steven said, trying to diffuse the tension. “Let’s just play something all together.”

“I’m not in the mood,” Lea replied coldly. She turned to Max. “You can be really wicked. I thought you told me you were going to help with my personal design project after the assignment.”

She seemed genuinely upset. Understandably so.

“That’s exactly what I was about to do,” Max said quickly, his tone softening. “I wanted to show you—it’s saved on my other laptop, which is in my room. I was just teasing.”

“So you were just trying to get a rise out of me?” Will asked.

“Exactly,” Max replied with a grin, turning to Will before facing Lea again. He took both her hands gently in his and said more sincerely, “I’m sorry if I offended you. That wasn’t my intention at all.”

I think Lea felt a little shy, especially with all of us staring. She looked away and said, “It’s forgotten. Let’s go see that plan.” Then she turned and walked upstairs without another word. Max followed close behind.

As soon as they were gone, I said with a smile, “I didn’t know Max could be that much of a gentleman.”

“A real romantic, you mean,” Stacy laughed with me.

“Yeah. Not a pl***oy like his brother,” Megan added, glaring in Jason’s direction.

“Who? Me? A pl***oy?” Jason blinked innocently, earning laughter from the rest of us.

We settled down. The boys finally paused their game, and a maid brought in refreshments. Not the same one who opened the door earlier. Just how many maids did this house have?

After a while, Max and Lea returned.

“We’re back! What are we playing?” Max asked, casually plopping down on the couch beside Lea.

“Isn’t it getting late?” I asked, mostly directing the question to Stacy and Megan. “It’s already past five.”

“If you’re worried about your curfew, we’ll get back before then,” Stacy said, waving it off. “But better call your mom.”

“I’ll just text her. She’s probably sleeping anyway,” I replied.

“Alright then, what’s the game?” Steven asked.

“Hide and seek!” Lea said, her eyes lighting up with enthusiasm.

“Isn’t that a bit childish, Lea?” Max said gently.

She pouted.

“Cards? Poker?” Will suggested.

“Nah, you guys will win every round,” Megan groaned.

“Then let’s play Truth or Dare,” Jason said with a wicked grin, his eyes flicking to me.

“That’s a sinister game, Jason,” Stacy warned.

“Which is exactly why he picked it,” Karl chimed in dryly.

We all sighed. It seemed like we were out of game ideas.

“I have one!” I suddenly said. “What if we combine all three into one game?”

Everyone turned to look at me.

“How?” they all asked in unison.

Discipline, Consistency, and the Role of Motivation

We’ve all been there, staring at a task we know we should be doing, but somehow we keep scrolling, daydreaming, or finding excuses. The truth is simple: *procrastination is your first enemy*. Just do what you have to do now!

That little decision to start instead of delaying is often the hardest. Many times, we wait for the “perfect” moment, the perfect energy, or the perfect mood. But perfection is a trap. *Action beats hesitation every single time*.

And here’s the thing: *who doesn’t risk has no gain*. Life rewards those who dare. Starting a business, applying for a new job, beginning your project or speaking up in class all come with uncertainty. But fear of failure kills more dreams than failure itself. That’s why it’s important to *remove that fear in you*!

Now, if we look closely, the secret behind lasting success isn’t just about fighting procrastination or being brave once in a while. It’s about building habits. That’s where discipline comes in. Discipline means showing up even when you don’t feel like it. It’s the quiet voice that says, “I’ll do it anyway.” Over time, that discipline gives birth to something powerful: consistency.

In fact, I like to say it this way: *discipline is the mother of consistency*. Without discipline, we act only when we’re motivated or excited. But with discipline, we act regularly, and regular action builds momentum.

This brings us to an important debate: what about motivation? Motivation is wonderful, it inspires us, sparks ideas, and gives us the push to start. Think of it like the fuel you pour into the car at the beginning of a journey. But here’s the catch: motivation doesn’t last. Some days you’ll wake up feeling unstoppable, other days you won’t even want to get out of bed.

That’s why consistency can’t depend on motivation alone. It depends on discipline. Discipline is like the engine of the car, even if the fuel is low, the engine keeps working because you built it strong.

So yes, motivation has an impact on consistency: it helps us start, and it can re-ignite us when we’re tired. But it’s discipline that sustains consistency, and consistency is what brings results.

In the end, success isn’t about waiting for inspiration. It’s about building habits strong enough to carry you through the days when inspiration is nowhere to be found.

Chapter 13: Flirt, friend and something more

William’s POV

“She’s my girl; your sister, best friend,” Steven said disapprovingly as he moved to set up the video game.

Jason turned to Karl with a relaxed grin.

“I already have my eyes on someone else,” he replied, “but I won’t deny, she’s a beauty.”

Then Jason turned to me with a teasing look.

“Don’t start playing the ‘you’re in love too, blah blah blah’ card.”

I laughed. “Nope, I don’t have a girlfriend. But yeah she’s gorgeous. Even more today.”

It was true. This was the first time I’d seen her dressed so casually. At school, she always looked elegant, classy and put together. And that night at the nightclub? She was bold and sassy.

“Isn’t the Arivena daughter Clara your girlfriend?” Jason asked.

“No. Why does literally everyone think that?” I replied, maybe more to convince myself than anyone else.

“She’s always around you more than anyone here,” Jason said. “Even more than the girls. Except for Karl’s cousin, it’s always either you or her.”

Steven joined in with a smirk. “It’s obvious, man. That’s love.”

“Unfortunately for her,” Karl added with a shrug, “William doesn’t feel the same.”

Jason raised a curious brow. “Why not? Do you love someone else?”

“No,” I answered plainly.

“Then what’s the problem? Just get with her case closed. For men, love isn’t always necessary,” Jason said, nonchalant.

“Even though I disagree with that,” Steven added dramatically, “I’ll admit that’s not the only thing stopping him.”

“He hates commitments,” Steven and Karl said at the same time.

We burst out laughing at their synchronized response.

“I see you guys know me well,” I chuckled.

“Yup, man,” they all chimed in.

“We’re not talking about marriage or getting engaged,” Jason said. “If you want freedom, just tell her you want an open relationship.”

I frowned slightly. “No, I don’t do that crap. I wouldn’t accept it from a girlfriend, so I won’t do that to her either.”

“Okay, fair,” Jason said, nodding. “Just make it clear that it’s a present thing nothing serious. Women always see themselves in the future with their partners. But if you explain, she’ll understand. Trust me, I’m an expert in men-women relationship matters.”

“You mean toxic ones, right?” Steven said mockingly.

Jason shot him a glare and threw the gear stick at him.

“As if you’re not the same,” he retorted.

“He clearly isn’t,” Karl said, catching the gear stick and tossing it back. “Or else, you wouldn’t have let him date Megan.”

Jason laughed. “Yeah, you’ve got a point. Can’t blame me for liking… you-know-who.”

He turned to me again.

“Take it from me, women love men who’ve got experience, who can take the lead. What better way to learn than with someone who loves you unconditionally? You wouldn’t be using her, it’d be a win-win situation.”

I had thought about it before. Even Dad and Eric had advised me to give it a try.

“I’ll ask her to be my girlfriend,” I said with quiet resolve.

---

Britney’s POV

The atmosphere in the study room was both calm and quietly busy. On one side, Max and Lea were deep in discussion about their architectural project, sketching layouts and bouncing ideas off each other. On the other, Megan, Stacy, and I were struggling to complete our group presentation.

The problem? We were missing a crucial diagram.

Searching online hadn’t helped much—everything was either too vague or way too detailed. We needed something clear and concise.

“I think I saw that diagram in my textbook,” Megan said suddenly. “It’s in the sitting room. I was reading it before you guys arrived and forgot to bring it up. I’ll send a maid to get it.”

“I’ll go,” I offered, already getting to my feet.

Megan’s house was similar in layout to the Petersons’; a blend of elegance and warmth, with a wide staircase and high ceilings.

As I stepped into the sitting room, I spotted the boys, seated comfortably, laughing and playing their video game. Their conversation was animated, filled with jokes and banter.

Then, mid-laughter, I caught a line from William:
“…I’ll ask her to be my girlfriend.”

My heart skipped.

Who was he talking about? Clara? That couldn’t be. She was the one in love with him, not the other way around.
Someone else? Maybe. But how would I even know?

In any case, it’s none of my business.

“Sorry to disturb you,” I said aloud, stepping fully into the room as their attention turned to me.

“You’re not disturbing,” Jason said smoothly, flashing his signature flirty smile. “In fact, your presence is… soothing. Can I help you with anything?”

He’s definitely a flirt, I thought. Megan hadn’t warned me for nothing.
“My brother can be a huge flirt,” she’d told me earlier. “Don’t fall for his charm. He’s a hopeless womanizer.”

And he had the charm to prove it.

“Not really,” I replied, scanning the coffee table. “I just came for this.” I picked up the book and gave them a polite smile. “Carry on.”

I turned and walked back upstairs to the study room.

We quickly wrapped up our assignments—both groups—and when we were done, we all headed back down to the sitting room together.

Chapter 12: An Afternoon of Surprises

William’s POV

At exactly 2 p.m., I got ready to meet up with my longtime buddy. Just as I was heading down the stairs to leave, Mom called out to me.

“W***y, where are you going?” she asked, raising an eyebrow as she leaned against the doorway.

“To the Wrights’ place. Jason’s back in town,” I replied, slipping on my watch.

She gave me a look. “Why do you always spend your weekends with friends instead of your family?”

“Mum, come on. It was only last week, and today wasn’t even planned. He just called this morning. Besides, we had our family time yesterday, didn’t we?”

She sighed, her voice tinged with disappointment. “Okay, I understand.”

Mom’s love language has always been quality time. Dad, on the other hand, is the gift-giver type. He’s constantly buried in work, and yesterday was a rare exception when he stayed home. He decided to make up for it by working this Saturday.

Mom’s job doesn’t demand her presence in the office every day. She works mostly from home, preferring the kitchen and the garden, her little sanctuary of creativity and peace. You could call it her “home office.”

I sat beside her on the couch and gently bumped her shoulder. “Next week, I promise. You and me only.”

She smiled warmly. “A promise is a debt.”

“You’re heading to the Wrights’ villa, right?” a voice chimed in from the stairs.

We both turned to see Lea descending, a mischievous grin playing on her lips.

“Yup. Why?”

“Can I come with you? I’ve got an assignment with that plum-head,” she said, stopping at the last step.

“Max?” Mom asked with a disapproving glance.

Lea chuckled sheepishly. “Yeah… him.”

“Mum, just let it go. She’s crazy,” I muttered, then turned to Lea. “Get ready quickly. I’m leaving.”

“I’m already good to go. Let’s move,” she replied casually.

“First stop is the Petersons,” I added as we headed out.

We said goodbye to Mom and left. The way Max and Lea bicker, it’s hard to tell if they’re enemies or… something else entirely. That’s their business.

At the Petersons’, Karl had just pulled into the driveway. The gateman opened the gates, and we all went in together. Inside the villa’s living room, we found Steven, Stacy, and, was that Britney?

“You guys are finally here. We can go now,” Stacy announced.

“We?” I echoed, surprised. Jason told me it was just the guys. Stacy and Britney weren’t supposed to be here, at least not according to the plan. Do they even know each other?

“They have an assignment to do with Megan,” Karl answered smoothly.

The rest of us exchanged skeptical glances. Why did Karl know that? Stacy cut in quickly, “I told him. Why are you all looking at him like that?”

Steven and I shared a knowing look. That discussion, before the nightclub incident, we never got to finish it.

“I don’t think I’m invisible,” Lea grumbled behind me. “Hi, Steven, Stacy, and…?”

“I’m Britney,” she replied with a polite smile.

“I’m Lea, W***y’s sister,” she introduced herself.

“Hey Britney, sorry for not greeting you earlier,” I said quickly. Karl nodded in greeting too.

“So, you’re a med student? How are your assignments structured, do they give you symptoms to diagnose from?” Lea asked curiously.

“Just like how you draw architectural plans from equipment specs,” Stacy laughed. “That’s your assignment, right?”

“Yeah, but that’s Max’s part,” Lea replied.

“Enough chitchat. Let’s go,” Steven said, cutting the banter short.

We split into two cars—Karl rode with me and Lea, while Steven, Stacy, and Britney took the other car.

When we arrived at the Wrights’, Megan was already in the sitting room.

“You’re here for Jason, right?” she asked us. “And you, Lea, for Max?”

We all nodded. She turned to a maid and asked her to go call them.

“Yo! Long time no see,” Jason greeted us, giving each of us a friendly pat on the back.

Turning to Lea, he asked, “Are you coping well with university life?”

“Very well, actually,” she replied.

“I hope Max isn’t being a pain in the ass,” he laughed.

“Me? A pain in the ass? I think you’ve got the wrong person. The real pain is right there,” Max shot back as he descended the stairs. He turned to Britney, “Oh, sorry Britney, I didn’t see you behind these fools. Welcome to the Wrights’ residence.”

“Thank you,” she said with a shy smile.

Jason finally noticed her. “My bad. What a beauty we have here.” He took her hand. “I’m Jason, the eldest son of the Wrights. May I have the honor of knowing your name?”

“I’m Britney Morgan,” she answered, placing her hand in his.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” he said, kissing her knuckles and holding her gaze.

“Can you stop flirting with my friend? Don’t touch,” Megan interrupted, dragging Britney away. Stacy, Max, and Lea followed them into the study.

“See you soon, beauty,” Jason called after her, his eyes glued to her retreating figure.

He slumped into the couch with a smirk. “She’s gorgeous. An absolute feast for the eyes. Don’t you think so, guys?”

But something about the way he looked at her unsettled me. Jason was charming, sure, but behind that charm was the city’s most notorious womanizer. And Britney, she didn’t seem the type to play games.

I just hoped she wouldn’t fall into his.

Chapter 11: General meeting?

William’s POV

We kept chatting about everything and nothing until the food was ready. As usual, even though we have maids and a cook, when it comes to family meals, Mum insists on doing it herself. It’s something she’s always loved, and something she passed down to Tricha and Lea.

Lunch was lively. Everyone was in a good mood. After we finished eating, the maids came in to clear the table. That’s when Tricha stood up, her face glowing.

“I have something important to share,” she said with a smile.

Eric joined her, gently taking her hands and kissing them before turning to us.

“Tricha and I are going to be parents again, she’s pregnant.”

Joy broke out instantly. Mum and Dad hugged them, offering warm congratulations. Lea was so excited she started dancing with no music. Mira, completely unaware of what was happening but feeding off the joyful energy, danced with her aunt and laughed at everyone’s happiness. She was adorable, honestly.

“Looks like someone’s excited to become a big sister,” Eric said, lifting Mira in his arms and planting a kiss on her forehead. She giggled and returned the affection with a kiss on his nose before wriggling out of his arms and running straight to Mum for another cuddle.

“Since last week, she hadn’t been feeling well,” Eric explained. “So we went for a check-up this morning... and, well surprise! We found out today and figured we’d celebrate and share the news while it’s still fresh.” He winked at me.

That explained why they were late. We spent the rest of the afternoon talking and laughing until it was time for them to leave.

Mum tried to keep Mira with her, but apparently, she had an appointment to spend the weekend with her other grandma.

---

The Next Morning – Saturday

I got a call from Jason, Megan and Max’s older brother. He’s 24, just a year older than me and the guys. He’s doing a Master’s in Finance and Enterprise Management basically Business Admin at St. Martin University in the northern part of the country. We’re based in the central region, in the economic capital. He’s not just Megan’s brother; he’s our friend too.

“Yo Jason, how far man?” I said when I picked up.

“I’m good, bro. And you?” he asked.

“Can’t complain. How’s life over there?”

“I’m actually in Janeiro for a week’s break,” he said. “I wanted to invite you, Steven, and Karl for a game party this afternoon. At my parents’ place.”

“I’m in. What time?”

“Let’s say 2:30 p.m.”

“Cool, 2:30 it is.”

“I’ll inform the others,” he added before we ended the call.

After my usual Saturday morning routine quick workout, light breakfast, a little chilling I texted the guys in our WhatsApp group. We decided to meet at the Petersons’ place first. Their house is our usual hangout spot since it’s kind of at the center of all our homes.

---

Britney’s POV

It was almost 2 p.m. and Stacy and I were to head to the Wrights’ villa. I’d never been there before, so I wanted to look nice, without doing too much.

After my shower, I picked out a slim-fit blue denim, paired it with a white crop top and a light sky-blue jacket. I wore white tennis shoes and tied my curly hair into a high ponytail. A little mascara, eyeliner, lip gloss, and neatly drawn brows were enough to highlight my features. I tossed a few essentials into my satchel and walked out.

Mum was in the living room when I passed through.

“Where are you going dressed like that?” she asked, eyeing me playfully.

“Why? Is it bad?” I said, glancing down at myself.

“No, it’s not bad. But clearly you’re going out. So where to?” she pressed.

“Oh!” I smacked my forehead with my palm. “I completely forgot to tell you. Stacy, Megan, and I have a group assignment due Tuesday. I’m heading to Megan’s house. But first, I’ll stop by Stacy’s.” I sat beside her and gave her a smile.

Mum hadn’t met Megan yet in person, but she’d seen her in pictures and overheard our long calls.

“I thought you hadn’t been to her place before?”

“I haven’t. That’s why I’m going with Stacy,” I clarified.

She nodded. “Alright then. Take care. Come back safe and sound.” She kissed my forehead.

I leaned over and kissed her cheek. “Don’t worry, Mum. See you later.”

As I left, I couldn’t help but think she’d be spending her afternoon alone again. Laura was with Chris, and even though she’s an adult, her curfew’s 10 p.m.—unless she gets special permission. Mine is 8 p.m. So unfair.

I reached the Petersons’ villa around 2:10. The gateman must’ve recognized me, because he opened the gate without asking questions. When I stepped into the living room, Stacy and Steven were already there.

“Hello, my favorite siblings,” I said with a grin as I plopped down on the couch.

“Hi Britney,” they said in unison.

“You ready?” I asked Stacy.

“Yeah, but we’re going with Steven,” she replied.

“You don’t want her driving your car?” I teased him.

Just for context—Stacy doesn’t have her own car yet since she’s not 21, which is the legal age. She does have a personal driver who usually takes her to school, but he only works weekdays. Apparently, he’s a family man, and Stacy told her parents not to burden him on weekends. The car she uses belongs to the family, and her parents won’t let her drive it, too protective, I guess. Even though she already has her license.

“I’m not that stingy with my cute baby sister,” Steven said with mock pride.

Stacy rolled her eyes. “Stop embarrassing me in front of my friend. I’ll accept being cute but not a baby.”

Steven chuckled. “Britney, we’re just waiting for W***y and Karl. Jason invited us to the Wrights’ villa. Or as he puts it, ‘the heir of the Wright empire' invited us.

We all laughed. Megan had told me a bit about her big brother Jason, the one who’s supposed to take over the family business. He studied business in another region and seems really dedicated to it. But from what I know, they’re a tight family just like Stacy and Steven.

Steven turned to me. “Want some juice or something? I can get a maid to bring it.”

Then to Stacy, “Can’t you offer your friend something? Luckily, the gentleman that I am is here.”

I laughed. “No need, but thanks.”

Stacy rolled her eyes at him. “Did it kill you to be polite for once?”

Their back-and-forth made me smile. I loved their dynamic. It reminded me of Laura and me, endless teasing, but always with love.

Just then, we heard a car horn.

“They’re here,” Stacy said, peeking through the window.

I looked up from my phone and sure enough, W***y and Karl stepped into the living room a moment later. We exchanged greetings.

But what caught my eye was the girl who followed them in. She looked a little younger than Stacy and me. That must’ve been Lea, William’s sister.

I was surprised to see her, not in a bad way, just… curious. Apparently she has a group assignment with Max. So that explained her presence.

Chapter 10: Apologies

Britney’s POV

As the teacher droned on, I tried to focus on his words, not on what had happened during the break. My mind kept replaying it, like an annoying echo I couldn't silence.

Once the final bell rang, I turned to Megan.
“Can you give me W***y’s and Clara’s phone numbers?”

She handed me her phone without question. “Check my contacts.”

“Thanks, I got them,” I said after a short scroll.

“What do you need them for?” Stacy asked, raising an eyebrow.

“I’ll explain later,” I replied, avoiding her gaze.

“Alright, let’s head home. The others already left,” she informed me.

Stephen had texted her, apparently. We walked outside together, and I caught a taxi back home.

The house was quiet. Mom was napping, and Laura hadn’t returned yet. Perfect. No interruptions.

After taking a bath and grabbing something to eat, I recharged my phone. Then, with hesitant fingers, I dialed W***y’s number. My heart was thudding so loudly it drowned out the dial tone.

Just as I was about to hang up after a few rings, he picked up.
“William Santos speaking.”

“It’s me... Britney.”

A tense silence fell over the line.

“Is something wrong?” he asked.

“No. Yes. I mean… not really.” I exhaled shakily. “I just wanted to apologize for my attitude earlier. During break. If I don’t say it now, I might not be able to sleep tonight.”

“It’s not me you should be apologizing to,” he said gently. “Clara was the one hurt.”

“I know,” I sighed. “But she... she hates me. If I call her and she sees it’s me, she’ll hang up without hesitation.”

I lowered my voice. “Could you maybe… help me with that?”

“Not Megan or Stacy?” he asked.

I mumbled something, but I was pretty sure he caught it.

“Because she loves you,” I whispered. “Because you and Susie are close to her. And… Susie and I barely know each other.”

“Oh, so I’m close to you then?” he teased.

Even though we weren’t speaking face-to-face, I could imagine the smirk on his lips.

“Erm… I– I didn’t mean it like—”

He laughed. “Relax. Alright, I’ll talk to her. What about now? She’ll listen, I promise.”

“Now is good. Better now than later,” I agreed. “Thank you so much, Will.”

William’s POV

I called Clara right after. Knowing her temper, I knew she’d hang up immediately if she wasn’t warned—so I pleaded with her.

When she asked who it was, I told her to be patient. “Just listen,” I said. “You’ll understand soon enough.”

A few minutes later, Britney texted me a simple Thank you. That was enough to let me know things hadn’t gone terribly.

Still, I kept thinking about what Britney had said.

Because she loves you.

That much was true. If anyone else had tried to convince Clara to stay on a call with Britney, she’d have exploded. Even if they mentioned the name, if it wasn’t someone she trusted, she would’ve shut it down.

But she didn’t this time. Because it was me.

I just hoped that one day, her feelings for me would fade. She deserved a kind of love I knew I could never give her back.

Clara’s POV

What did W***y mean by “listen to the person”?

As soon as his call ended, another one came in. My phone lit up, and my heart tightened.

I picked up but said nothing, waiting.

“Clara, are you there? It’s Britney,” said the voice on the other end.

So that’s what W***y meant. That girl.

“What do you want?” I asked bluntly.

“I just wanted to say I’m sorry. For earlier. I shouldn’t have spoken to you like that.”

Her voice was hesitant, as if she wanted to sound sincere.

“I’ve heard. I’ll think about it,” I said flatly, then ended the call.

But something nagged at me.

How did W***y know she’d call?

That only meant one thing. My little plan had failed.

Furious, I began throwing things around my room. The maids could clean it up later. That’s what they’re paid for.

So much for that arrangement.

William’s POV

The week flew by.

Clara and Britney didn’t cross paths again not even a word. But Britney and I kept talking, mostly over the phone.

And honestly… I learned a lot about her. She was very intelligent, no doubt about that.

Not at all the image I’d painted of her a month ago.

Today was Friday, but Lea and I had no classes. My teacher was sick, and hers had gone on a trip.

Mom, ever the organizer, declared it the perfect day to invite Trisha-my older sister, her husband, and their daughter Mira, over for lunch.

When I told her they probably had work, she waved me off.

“It’s already arranged,” she said with a smile.
Money is power. I thought

“It’s already 10 a.m. and they’re still not here,” Mom grumbled, pacing near the window.

“Be patient, Eli,” Dad said with a calm chuckle. “They’ll be here soon.”

Right then, we heard the gate creak open.

“Tricha!” Lea squealed, rushing forward to hug her. “And Mira, my baby girl!” she cooed, lifting the little one into her arms.

“Hello, Eric,” I greeted warmly as we all exchanged pleasantries.

We welcomed them inside like the close-knit family we were. While Dad, Eric, and I headed to the sitting room, Mom, Lea, and Tricha made their way to the kitchen with Mira toddling behind them, curious and energetic.

“I want to help!” Mira declared, picking up a plastic spoon from the table and proudly offering it to Mom.

“You’re our little chef now, aren’t you?” Tricha laughed, lifting her daughter up to the counter as Mom pinched Mira’s cheeks lovingly.

“You’ve got her trained early,” Lea joked, tying a small apron around Mira’s waist with care.

Back in the living room, Dad nudged Eric playfully.
“You know, before you arrived, Eli was already complaining about your lateness,” he said, amused.

“I was starving,” Eric replied with a grin. “Tricha wouldn’t let me leave the house just like that.”

“There’s plenty of food here, though. Mum was worried,” I added.

Dad shook his head and chuckled. “W***y, you’re missing the point. He’s not talking about food.”
He turned to Eric. “I hope this delay wasn't in vain and that we’ll soon be expecting another grandchild.”

I blinked, confused. “Wait—what does hunger have to do with grandchildren?”

Eric laughed. “We had our… intimate moment. That’s what your dad meant.”

“Oh!” I said, realization dawning. “Ew. Beurk.”

“Too late, Hewett,” Dad teased. “Why the dramatic reaction?”

“Because Tricha is my sister, for God’s sake!” I shot back.

They all laughed as if imagining it was somehow hilarious.

Eric turned to me with a teasing smile. “So, William… do you have a girlfriend?”

“You mean like a female friend or an actual partner?” I asked, already knowing where this was going.

“A partner, obviously,” he replied, rolling his eyes dramatically.

“No, I don’t. Why?”

“Well, at your age, it’s pretty normal to have one. Why don’t you?” he asked sincerely.

“I’m not in a rush. I just haven’t met the right one yet.”

Eric wasn’t just my brother-in-law—he felt like a real older brother. Ever since Tricha introduced him to the family, we were all drawn to his warmth and maturity. He was the perfect in-law: respectful, funny, and devoted to his wife and daughter. Mira adored him.

“What about the Arivena girl?” Dad suddenly asked.

“Clara?”

“Yes. The Arivenas are good friends of ours. You and Clara would make a fine couple.”

That was so typical of Dad. Even in lighthearted conversations, he always let his businessman’s mindset peek through. For him, relationships—like investments—had to yield profit, advantages, or long-term benefits. There were pros to that thinking, sure… but also cons. And sometimes, he missed the human part.

“No, Dad. She’s just a friend.”

“If I didn’t know you, I’d think you were gay,” Eric said, raising a brow. “You sure you even like women?”

“Of course I do,” I said quickly. “I like… round asses.”

They burst into laughter again.

“Is Clara not a woman?” Dad came back, ever relentless.

“I told you. She’s my friend. I don’t want to lead her on or hurt her feelings. I just can’t return the kind of love she has for me.”

Eric leaned back. “So she does love you?”

I nodded slightly, then told them everything—what Clara and I were, what she felt, and what I didn’t. It was one of those rare moments where I felt safe enough to be transparent.

“You’re already hurting her feelings by rejecting her and still staying close,” Eric said seriously. “Why not give it a try? See where it leads. If it doesn’t work out, at least you were honest and gave her clarity. But if it does… maybe she’s the one. Set clear boundaries and communicate. That way, no regrets.”

I smiled at him. “I’ll think about it. Thanks, Eric.”

“No pressure. That’s what big brothers are for,” he said, giving me a reassuring pat on the back.

Dad sighed dramatically. “Oh, my son… you still have so much to learn about love and women.”
