Africa’s first female billionaire, Isabel dos Santos, has scored a major legal win after the Angolan Supreme Court cleared her of three criminal charges. The ruling comes after years of legal battles over her management of Sonangol, Angola’s state oil company.
The Supreme Court dismissed charges including criminal association, abuse of power, document forgery, and simple tax fraud, though she still faces counts of embezzlement, aggravated fraud, breach of trust, influence peddling, and money laundering. Alleged losses to the Angolan state total more than $208 million.
Even with this partial acquittal, Dos Santos continues to face legal challenges abroad. She is appealing a London court ruling that froze $734 million of her assets over loan disputes, which she and her company Unitel International Holdings BV claim were politically motivated.
