Over the last few weeks I’ve been making pizza 🍕 plates. 33cm in diameter and 99 on the pain in the a** level. Large plates like these are actually one of the harder products to make. For a shape so simple, they tend to take longer than any other pot to make. However there was one silver lining, the glaze. Because of their size these platters can’t be dipped in any bucket so I poured a double coat of glaze which gave an effect that I loved. For now I’ll just forget the process and admire the glaze layers.

Raw glaze never looks like the finished piece. This bowl has been hand brushed with a second and third glaze layer over a dark base — right now it looks pink, almost delicate. What comes out of the kiln will look nothing like this. That’s the part that still gets me every time. Glazing is equal parts technique and trust. The brush strokes are deliberate, the layering is intentional, but the fire always has the final say.

New cups for the office. These actually ended up being refired after the first batch came out quite pale. This can happen with our gas oven as the temperature is not always that even across each level. They came out even better than expected so I was pleased they got a second wind.fired at cone 6 (1220c) and ready for an in holy amount of coffee.

Floating blue glaze on red stoneware with a little double layering. The sharp accordion shape has become an obsession of mine, the sharp edges cut the glaze and give a a lively brown line where the glaze is thin. This shape is also very ergonomic and makes it ideal for hold a potentially slippery oil bottle
