The Limassol w**e festival that lasted nine evenings is now over. Even though it's a very demanding period of work in the loud music from numerous stages, the smoke from the stalls smoking fish & grilling meat, and the big crowds of people until late each evening - we are content from all the conversations around the craft of chair making. The warmth that people have for the traditional chairs of Cyprus is the message we keep, and are always happy to exchange knowledge & experiences around the subject. We heard of some chair makers that are new to us and answered to questions about the craft.

The little community of artisans that gathers yearly during w**e festival bonds during the 9 evenings, we miss this during the rest of the year! It would be a dream to have a craft festival in the Municipal Gardens that lasts for days!

Thank you to all visitors who passed our booth, fellow makers, the municipality of Limassol for hosting and w**e producers for keeping the tradition going!

The experience of doing a workshop session on the chair craft of mountainous Cyprus in the north of Japan was heartwarming. We got the chance to discuss & share skills, histories & perspectives on the key themes of the exhibition: Practices of creation and coexistence themed on Land, Technology and Care.

After the collaborative seat weaving with Cattail, the chair was set in the exhibition as part of the body of work titled "Craft Literacy." This resonated with Miyuki Oka's work about the wetland ecosystems Miyuki Oka

Interactive artwork where visitors can use the stamps.

We find remnants of stamps like wounds on the legs of old chairs under attempts to carve them off.
Demeaning colonial correspondence about grading, stamping and taxing timber is accessible at the Cyprus State archives: a game of nature preservation and extractivism.

The Phini chair’s shape is, to some extent, defined by its technology -- the tools used to create it, which is the reason these tools are ideal for this work. The set of tools is a result of history that includes colonisation by Britain and the social and economic status of the chair makers.

There was a traditional mountain chair that was always there, one that everybody knows. When it needed repair, it revealed that the chains of knowledge & culture were absent.
The journey of reviving the chair craft is rooted in the ecosystem and intertw**ed with history, gently repairing cultural loss.
