Artful Decadence
The hanaire, or flower vessel, is one of the characteristic forms of Iga ware, with its distinctive ears and irregular shape deeply rooted in the tradition.
Tanimoto Takashi takes this established vocabulary and pushes the clay into deliberately distorted, willfully deformed forms—at times raw, brutal and decadent in their naturalness.
And yet, I find that from all this distortion emerges a remarkable sense of balance. The vessel feels almost precarious, but somehow every element comes together in unexpected harmony.
This tension between the unrestrained and the balanced is at the heart of Tanimoto’s work—a contemporary expression of Iga’s asymmetrical Wabi-Sabi aesthetic.
A truly impressive piece in its quiet decadence.
