The Rope Stool
In the past month, 30 egyptian, danish, and international designers have worked in pairs on designing and building a stool inspired by ancient egyptian furniture. We created our design in three weeks leading up to a study trip to Egypt, and the last four days have been like a stool-building-marathon in the Pinocchio furniture factory in Damietta, Egypt. The local woodworkers helped us build, test, and make our stools come to life. It was an amazing experience of collaboration across language, culture, and competencies.
This stool utilizes an ancient egyptian method of joining wood: rope. Combined with traditional danish cord weaving and african sissoo-wood, the stool is a symbiosis between ancient knowledge and contemporary minimalism. The rope stool is constructed without any glue or metal, is lightweight, and has great ergonomics.
