Since the 80s, Egypt always got Michael Jackson on cassette. A few officially licensed reissues, and endless bootleg runs with photocopied artworks and generic titles, kiosk copies, third-generation dubs passed between cousins with the hiss baked in. A whole generation here learned Thriller and Bad off a tape nobody at Epic ever saw.

A soulful metamorphosis on disc.

Juno wrote THE COLOR PULP leaving home for the first time. It opens on “A Taste,” searching for a freedom she cannot find here, carrying all of it at once: wanting out, dreading the unknown, needing to take everyone she loves with her. “Supersonic” is where the anger goes, built to make you dance and cry in the same breath, collapsing halfway through so you can breathe. On “diditallforme” the fear turns into a claim, a push off the cliff and a torch found at the bottom. “Gameboy Funk (This Place)” is the pull backward, a town she thought she was done with and someone still waiting in it. By the closer, “Reflections in the Mud,” the leaving is growing beyond her: “rubble and dust, coastlines with no borders, a place that once was home”.

Juno calls it “sound design with emotional grit, fragments of velocity and longing turned into rhythm”, with her ethereal voice cutting tenderly through it.

Two years between Berlin and Cairo. Co-produced with Belal Ali, mastered by Heba Kadry.

The solo album from Cairo oud player and composer Aly Eissa, a key figure in the city’s experimental scene who has toured the world alone and with the trio The Handover. Eissa was mentored by two legends of Egyptian music, composer and multi-instrumentalist Abdo Dagher and oud master Hazem Shahin, and Eggshells carries both lineages into expansive, intricate original composition rooted in Egyptian classical and folk tradition.

The epic title track, oud alone, takes up two-thirds of the record before flowing into “Sukr At-taganni,” where Eissa plays and recites poetry by the Arab poet Baha’ al-din Zuhayr (1186 to 1258), serious, tender, and insistent. The music works two central concerns, time and microtonality, searching the geography of the oud for the exact point where a fingertip alters the soul of a sound. Phrases move from the percussive attack of sagat rhythms to delicate lines that dissolve before they reach the ear, fragments clinging together like shards of stained glass.

There is a version of the last fifteen years of rap that you can lay out on a floor and read like a spine. It runs from a teenager narrating one bad day in Compton, to a jazz-suite interrogation of survival and self-hatred, to a numbered sermon on faith and consequence, to a therapy session pressed to wax with a crown of thorns on the cover. Kendrick Lamar made all of it, and no entry in the run asks you to make excuses for it.

good kid, m.A.A.d city moves like a film script, the skits and the tape hiss doing the work of scene changes, a coming-of-age told in real time from the back seat of a Caprice. The kid who survived that day grew into the question of what survival costs, and To Pimp a Butterfly answered with live jazz musicians, spoken-word, and a record that carries fame as a debt.

That butterfly flew further beyond rap. Its wicked jazzy tension was in the room when David Bowie was crafting Blackstar with producer Tony Visconti, the extraordinary parting gift he left the world two days before he passed away.

The debt came due on DAMN., which tied the whole argument to the tension between weakness and wickedness and won the Pulitzer for it. The prize settled nothing. Mr. Morale sat down in the aftermath to talk about the damage underneath the crown, and GNX closed the spine in 2024, landing off the back of Not Like Us, the most decisive diss record of the century, a full West Coast album named after the Buick his father drove him home in.
