What have you always wanted space for at home?

Somewhere to watch a film without negotiating over the remote? Or enough room to roll out your yoga mat without moving the coffee table? Or would you love to have a dedicated space to write that novel that has been percolating inside of you for years?

When the children leave, an underused bedroom might give you that opportunity.
For a home cinema, start with comfortable seating, effective blackout curtains and the position of the screen. A sofa bed could also keep the room useful when the children come back, provided there’s space to open it.

For exercise, resist buying equipment before you’ve measured the room. Clear floor space, ventilation and suitable mats matter first, especially with Mallorca’s summer heat and tiled floors.

Think about what you’ll actually use. If you love yoga, make room for yoga. If your idea of a perfect evening involves a film and your feet up, choose the sofa!
Talk any changes through with your children, then give your own wish list some attention.

Your child has left for university, but their bedroom still looks exactly as it did at sixteen.

When you’re both ready, this could be a chance to turn it into a welcoming guest room, somewhere they’ll enjoy coming back to and friends and family can use between visits.

Start with the things that make staying comfortable: a lovely bed, good bedside lighting, somewhere to unpack and curtains that keep Mallorca’s early morning sunshine from waking everyone at dawn.

Keep their favourite belongings, talk through what can be stored and have some fun choosing colours, textures and bedding.

I redesigned my children’s rooms once they’d left home, and my daughter loves staying in the guest bedroom I created. Changing the space doesn’t have to mean losing that feeling of home.

I go to trade fairs to see what’s new and what’s changing, NOT to be told what to design!

In Valencia last week, there were curves, earthy tones, warm metals, plenty of texture and colour drenching. I love seeing new ideas, discovering materials and thinking about how I might use them in someone’s home.

But liking a trend isn’t a reason to use it everywhere. The question is: would you love living with it?

If it suits you and makes you happy, wonderful. If you prefer something completely different, that’s equally valid. You’re the one coming home to it every day.

When my children left home, I knocked down the wall between their bedrooms. Perhaps not everyone’s first response to an empty nest, but let me explain!

When they were little, they shared a room. Later, I divided it into two smaller bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms so they could each have their own space.

Once they’d both left home, I brought the rooms back together and created a spacious guest bedroom with a large en-suite bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe. I had enormous fun with the colours, patterns and a beautiful botanical wallpaper.

My daughter loves staying there when she visits. My son prefers the guest house at the back of the garden. And I get to enjoy the room between visits, sometimes as an office, sometimes for yoga.

Everyone is happy. Particularly me!

If your children have recently left Mallorca for university, you might be wondering what happens to their rooms now. You don’t have to change anything straight away, but when you’re ready, it’s worth thinking about what you’d love to have space for.

Working in a family business gives you a particular perspective on stories like this.

Creativity may be what people see from the outside, but behind it is the work of building something, employing people, making decisions, taking risks and somehow protecting the creative spark that made you start in the first place.

That was part of why the news about Designers Guild affected us so much at Knox.

For decades, Tricia Guild built a business around a very clear creative point of view. As designers, we have had the privilege of taking some of that creativity and using it in our own way, in homes here in Mallorca. Looking back through these projects, I can see just how much pleasure those colours and patterns have given me over the years.
I am relieved that the Designers Guild name and archive will continue, while also recognising that the original family business coming to an end is a real loss.

Perhaps that is why this story has stayed with me. Creative businesses matter, and the people who build and sustain them matter too.

I’m Justine Knox, an interior designer based in Mallorca with more than 30 years’ experience creating homes with personality.

I believe interiors should reflect the people who live in them, rather than follow a formula. I love colour, pattern, texture and beautiful craftsmanship, and I’m not afraid to mix them.

Alongside my own design projects, I run Knox Design with my family and team, bringing together interior design, furniture, fabrics and everything needed to create a home that feels individual, comfortable and genuinely lived in.

Having a network within your business is vital, and seeing fellow designers as potential collaborators rather than competitors is much more productive. Having access to a group of fellow professionals at various stages in their career can help stimulate new ideas, fresh perspectives, new contacts and it’s my pleasure to be able to offer that platform here in Mallorca.
