Meet Juntas. My way of making sense of what I experienced in La Encantada, Peru.
There, in Melissa Inga’s workshop, I worked with the wonderful women of the Mujeres Hacia el Mundo association. The village is full of pottery workshops struggling to survive and shine. Together, we explored how to create distinctive pieces and develop a voice of their own.
They juggled housework with work in the pottery studio. A lot to carry. Sound familiar? I also discovered they were brilliant decorators, burnishing their pieces to a shine I’ve never managed to achieve. BUT the potter’s wheel was reserved for men, leaving the women heavily dependent on male hands to create, produce and earn a living. A setting that placed real pressure on women and their autonomy.
And yes, of course we got behind the wheel together so they could learn to use it!
As we worked, I saw and felt something familiar: the freedom to make, share and express ourselves. The feeling that, while we were there together in that workshop, everything was all right. Pottery as a space of refuge and connection.
That’s the feeling I wanted to bring into clay. I really hope you love it.
If this idea speaks to you, if its values resonate and you’d like to bring them into your home, get in touch. It would mean so much to see that feeling travel beyond my studio and find a place in your home.
