Apples have always been celebrated at this time of year. Infact, the celebration of (Autumn Equinox) which comes before / has the humble apple at its heart. In the northern hemisphere, the apple is harvested at this time of year and has come to represent fertility and abundance Often also representing knowledge and intelligence, it's a symbol associated with teachers, schools and knowledge in general. There is perhaps no coincidence that the apple harvest coincides with the return of children to school and the concept of taking an apple for a teacher to say Thank You.
I remember as a child playing - we played two types - apples in a bowl of water that you had to basically immerse yourself in to try and bite an apple or my preferred game, apples on strings hung from the ceiling. Either way you were blindfolded and the object of the games were to bite into an apple. If you managed to get good purchase on one, you could then keep it. That was your prize . . . . they were simpler times lol. I have to say I do now cringe slightly at this extremely unhygienic game. There were plenty of spit covered, bitten apples but it was the 70s / 80s and nobody worried too much about things.
