Why do all my quick projects turn into huge whole-room transformations 🥲 what even is a “quick project” when it comes to DIY? 😂

One ikea upcycle turned into levelling and laying a new floor.. turned into playhouse build, turned into a bespoke bookcase build.. turned into painting the ceiling.. turned into panelling and painting the walls.. turned into making a Swedish wall ladder.. my projects tend to snowball .. and that’s exactly why I try not to start anything unless I know I’ve got the material and funds to do the whole damn room start to finish 🙃

Make sure you’re following to catch each step of the playroom renovation! It’s also up for 5 different awards! Would love your votes! Link in bio!

I need to stop assuming everything will only take a few days.

DIY projects alwayssss take way longer, and cost way more than you initially think.. fair warning 🥲

THIS COULD’VE LOOKED SOOO BAD!… Not BAD for £150 though right? 😉

Part 5 of the playroom transformation and probably my favourite build so far (even if it wrecked me!)

I built this playhouse to give my son his own little sensory escape to wind down after school. To read books, play with his toys, listen to his Yoto/Tonies and just be hours of endless fun! But it turned out to be giving him sooo much more 🫶🏼

I used 2x3 CLS for the framing and secured it solid, making minimal damage to the room for easy removal in however many years.. honestly though.. I made the whole thing up as I went along! Everything was cut piece by piece, nothing really was planned other than the height and projection from the walls, so I don’t really have measurements to share, despite mocking it up in 3D beforehand!

Additional lighting was a must-have due to the west-facing window and of course, what kid doesn’t need their own remote control disco?! 🪩

But the part most people get wrong when building their own furniture/structures… the finer details.. the finishing touches! Rough edges, imperfect joins, no dimension.. i wanted to make this look like a little house, so spent (far too much) time making sure all CLS and mdf edges were faced, all windows had a sill, lintel and trim, the door had architrave and even the roof was scalloped!

Details are what takes it from DIY to Custom build 🙌🏼

Every seam, gap, hole and join was then filled and sanded within an inch of its life before covering the whole thing in BIN 👌🏽 the only primer I use on MDF!

Anyway.. you’ll have to stick around to see the rest.. see ya!

🌱BARGAIN BORDER FOR LESS THAN £10/meter🪵

This mammoth of a garden is going to cost me a fortune I swear, but I’m always looking for ways to landscape it on a budget.. from an upcoming crazy paving patio project from old slabs, to this spur of the moment idea, I’m on a mission to transform this garden into one of dreams, but of course, have it cost me as little as possible!!

Now I’ve cleared the logs and levelled the soil last year, I didn’t want to just leave this “football pitch” area of the garden blank. So to add some privacy screening on my neighbour’s side, pretty it up a bit and attract more bees and birds, I cut up a pile of spare fence posts I had from into random lengths - the shortest at 21cm, longest at 31cm with a couple lengths between. I then sealed all the cut ends with cut end preserver, and dug a 10cm deep trench a little wider than the blocks before adding some gravel for drainage with a shallow bed of postcrete, and began stacking the blocks on their ends, ensuring a completely random arrangement of tall and short blocks. I added more postcrete to the front and back, and watered until it wouldn’t absorb any more water. Finally, i backfilled with soil and began planting my flowering bushes, shrubs and low growing pollinator friendly plants before topping with compost.

I love how this FREE project has turned out, especially as it would cost less than £200 to recreate (excl plants) but saved myself over £700 by not buying precut border blocks 🙌🏼

Would you recreate this for your flower beds? LMK in the comments!

ad | With now TWO near misses that could have been full blown house fires, it was about time I did something that could actually protect my family and stop putting the house’s aesthetic transformations as priority!

FireAngel helped me with the placement and which models were needed to finally protect my home so I can sleep peacefully knowing we would actually be alerted next time there’s smoke/ a small fire brewing.. because honestly, we would NEVER have known with these two near-misses 😩

Since the ceilings were replastered we’ve had no smoke alarms, and be honest.. have you ever tested your kitchen heat alarm? Because we haven’t, and we’ve lived here 3 years 🫣

We’ve now installed:
• FA6720-R Kitchen Heat Alarm (hard-wired with a 10-year backup battery)
• FA6620-R Optical Smoke Alarm - one on each level (these have a 10-year battery life too and should be tested weekly)
• FA3322 Digital Display CO Alarm (portable with a temperature display)
• FA6812-EUX10 Digital Display CO Alarm (needs to go by the boiler)

A finished home should be safe as well as beautiful, but safety should always be a priority when renovating, I just wish I realised this sooner!

Check yours today before it’s too late & don’t keep putting it off like I did 😬
