The technique of making flat plates of glass for mirrors was brought to England by immigrant French glassworkers in the 1600s, and good quality mirrors gradually became affordable for the middle classes.

For many, this was the first time they could see their own reflection clearly, and the mirror perhaps showed a more honest picture than the portrait hanging on the wall..!
