B a l a n c e

I honestly don’t know how so many people balance working a full time job with running a small business on the side. I have absolutely not got it sussed…

I worked lots of extra hours last month and somehow, my sketchpad launch came and went, completely unacknowledged. I made the new collection available on my website and just failed to tell anyone!

I have never been very good at getting the work:life balance right, which is ultimately how I ended up taking some time out and starting this project in the first place. It is supposed to be my creative outlet - my happy place.

I need to get better at making time for the things that bring me joy - more of what I want to do and less of what I need to do. Any tips?

Journal > Sketchpad > Notebook

A small batch of handmade A5 sketchpads will soon be available online.

The sketchpads have 40 sheets (80 pages) of 300gsm recycled and FSC certified paper.

A5 seemed like the perfect size for a small on-the-go sketchpad.

To compare, our journals are B5 with 200 pages and our notebooks are B6 with 40 pages, both with 120gsm paper.

Let me know what you think!

Ica is 1!

Today marks a year since the launch of Ica. To celebrate, there’s a 10% discount on the journaling set collection.

The last year has had highs and lows, the same as any venture. The launch exceeded all expectations, and the first 48 hours did not feel real at all.

However, there was a period after that where I almost cancelled my orders and took the website down. My mental health had been suffering in the runup to the launch, and it all came to a head immediately after.

I had been putting a lot of pressure on myself, I was experiencing a lot of self-doubt, and I was convinced that nothing was good enough. I fulfilled the launch orders and then retreated from social media for a couple of months to reassess.

Thankfully, I returned with a better mindset, and I was somewhat back on track.

I had however lost momentum in terms of interest and sales and my irregular posts on social media (it’s not really my thing) were not really helping to change that, so I was particularly excited to start taking part in markets.

In the last six months, I have had some incredible days at markets in Leeds, Lincoln and Norwich, where I have also met some incredibly lovely people. (A special shoutout to The Pocket People). I have learnt from or been inspired by every small business owner I have spoken to. Equally, I have had the pleasure of chatting with some really kind, creative and interesting customers.

I may be a year in, but I feel like I am only just starting to find my feet with it. I haven’t necessarily hit any significant milestones, but I am starting to fall back in love with it all again. I am excited to be working on a small collection of sketchpads and I have some other ideas that I am looking forward to exploring.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me in the last year, whether it be following me on social media, sharing my posts, taking a business card, or of course making a purchase.

I am so glad that I decided to see this through.

Thanks for reading!
Jess

Hi 👋🏼

In a week or so, it will be a year since the launch which is completely crazy to me. Time just goes so quickly - too quickly.

I haven’t devoted nearly as much of that time to growing my small business as I possibly could or should have but hey, there’s always next year.

Reflecting on this last year, I realised that I am yet to properly show my face or introduce myself here. Some of you already know me pretty well but for those of you who don’t, I thought I would finally say hi.

I’m Jess.

I’m 27 years old and I live in my hometown in Lincolnshire. My creative background is originally in print design for fashion, but I took some time away from the industry to focus on improving my mental health and I never found my way back to it. I am currently working in more of a graphic design role for a local print and design firm.

(Actually, this photo was taken the day before I started my new job a few months ago).

Whilst taking the time to focus on my mental health, I discovered two therapeutic activities that really helped me; art for wellbeing and journaling for mindfulness. I wanted to somehow combine the two and find a way of encouraging the practice of these self-care techniques.

With that in mind, I created an eco-conscious stationery collection made up of journaling sets and stickers (and soon to be sketchpads!). The cover artwork in the collection was created during a series of cathartic process art exercises, involving bouncing paint-covered tennis balls and painting with my hands for example.

The hope is that the journals can offer a safe place to scribble, offload and free the mind, while the artwork can create further conversation about art for wellbeing and inspire others to try some of these processes themselves.

You can view the full collection in the Instagram shop or online at www.ica.design.
