Come make penguins with me!

I'm running a kids craft drop-in session at Sol Creative Foundry (Dry Drayton) on Sat 13 Sep.

We'll be making penguins from preloved clothes and fabric scraps. And the nerdy biologist in me made sure you've got plenty of choice in youR favourite penguin species! 🐧

There's a whole load of other activities going on too as part of their 'Wild World: Living and Working in Antarctica' event. So if you have little ones definitely check it out and book in advance!

Hi I'm Steph, serial crafter and textile enthusiast.

I run social embroidery evenings at the Yard in Ely (and across Cambridgeshire).

Don't worry if you've not done embroidery before. I like to take things slow and work at your pace. The evening is about having fun, relaxing and taking some time for yourself.

My next session is on Thursday 17 September, and we'll be doing blackwork embroidery. Inspired by historical Tudor embroidery styles we'll be embroidering custom caps for you to take home.

I'd love for you to join me!

One of the reasons I love blackwork is that the stitches themselves are actually very simple, usually running stitch or backstitch. But when they're added together in different combinations it looks so effective!

Want to give it a try? I have relaxed sessions coming up in pubs and bars across Cambridgeshire.
17 Sep - The Yard, Ely
22 Sep - The LAB, Cambridge

Sip and Stitch is back in September! Yay!

This time we'll be embroidering baseball caps, which should be great fun 🧢

We'll be using an embroidery technique called 'blackwork' which uses really simple stitches (mostly running or backstitch) to make geometric patterns. It lets you build up a really intricate design from basic stitches.

If you'd like to join me, I'd love to see you there! Dates for Ely, Cambridge and Northstowe are booked in, with a date fro Saffron Walden hopefully coming soon.

📅 17 Sep - Yard by Silver Oak, Ely
📅 22 Sep - The LAB Cocktail Bar & Kitchen, Cambridge
📅 Oct - Tap & Social, Northstowe

Mending supplies have arrived from Ministry of Mending - yay! 😁

I've been waiting a while until I needed a few things it's an extra nice treat now they're here.

I got:

🧶Darning Yarng
I'm planning a hidden mend on a beautiful merino top my husband bought for our anniversary and managed to get a hole in the wash. I was really excited to find their extra-fine merino darning yarn. Most other fine options I could fine contained nylon and I really wanted to stick to the original 100% merino. I bought two shades to test against the top and the darker shade is almost perfect. I can confirm they are super soft too!

🧵 Sashiko Needles
A while ago I patched my favourite jeans with sashiko using what I had to hand - stranded embroidery thread and a darning needle. The threads are already starting to wear through, so I when the other knee went I wanted to try out proper sashiki thread and also test out some different brands and sizes of sashiko needle to see what works best for me.

🪡 Metal Needle Threader
I wanted to try this out as a more sustainable alternative to the plastic needle threaders I currently use in my classes. I've tried this out already. It's not as fine, so not suitable for small-eye needles. It does work for my embroidery needles though, so I may switch once my current set of threaders have worn out.

Anyway, what's on your mending supplies wishlist?

What an incredible workshop!

I absolutely loved being in Saffron Walden last weekend sharing my passion for visible mending. Creative darning is my favourite class to teach because it brings out people's creativity and character.

It was such a lovely group and an absolute pleasure to work with Susie, who is clearly so passionate about creating a warm and welcoming space for crafters in Saffron Walden.

Now all I have to do is plan for the next instalment... weaving patterns here we come!
