A wonderful heritage project recently completed at St Nicholas Church, Britwell Salome.

Our team at CES Lighting & Electrical Specialists designed and delivered a bespoke electrical, lighting and heating scheme, including decorative heating chandeliers inspired by the geometric patterns within the church’s west stained-glass window.

This video shows the heating chandeliers in operation, demonstrating how modern, energy-efficient heating can be sensitively integrated into a historic church setting without compromising its character.

Discreet LED lighting enhances both the worship space and key architectural features, while intuitive controls allow lighting and heating to be operated at the touch of a button.

A sensitive, practical and cost-effective solution for a beautiful village church.

Another “catch the last train home from London” kind of night 🚆

David Burch and I spent the evening at St George the Martyr, Hanover Square, working through lighting designs, showcasing products, and collaborating with a fantastic team of clients and architects.

Great people, great project… and yes, those massive bags full of kit made the sprint to the station even more fun 😅

Working within historic buildings often means the most important work is the part nobody sees.

People rarely realise just how much infrastructure and cabling sits behind professional systems until the cable drums arrive and the routing begins.

For this project with St Mary Magdalene, Paddington, a major focus has been keeping every cable route as discreet as possible within the church, carefully navigating basement and crypt spaces, with precision drilling to ensure every service arrives exactly where it should while respecting the historic fabric of the building.

It’s a privilege for our CES Lighting & Electrical Specialists team to be working within such a significant Grade I listed church, and we’re looking forward to seeing the project completed over the coming weeks.

Watch how the space transforms 💡

At The Barn Theatre, lighting wasn’t designed for a single moment, it was designed for movement between moments.

This system allows the space to transition seamlessly from performance mode to event setting, shifting atmosphere without losing the character of the room.

Working alongside the theatre’s existing controls, it creates a flexible environment that supports everything from productions to weddings and community gatherings.

The result is a space that doesn’t need to reset, it simply evolves.

There’s something significant about returning to a project decades later.

At St Giles Church, Ashtead, we recently had the opportunity to revisit and modernise an installation originally completed nearly 20 years ago. The brief was clear: retain the integrity of the original scheme, while upgrading the lighting to meet today’s standards, improving efficiency, reducing maintenance, and supporting the journey towards net zero.

What makes this even more meaningful is the continuity behind the work.
From Graham Smith, who originally led the project, to Grant Ashworth, now carrying it forward, it reflects the strength of a family-led business built on long-term relationships, trust, and consistency.

Uncle and nephew. Founder and successor. The same commitment to doing things properly.

We’ve seen this same story unfold again at St Raphael’s in Kingston, another project revisited and carefully modernised after two decades.

In a world that often moves quickly, we value the long view:

Designing lighting that lasts
Building relationships that endure
And returning, years later, to make things even better

Thank you to our clients who continue to trust us over the long term, it’s a privilege we don’t take lightly.

Lighting that Respects the Past and Reveals It.

At CES Lighting & Electrical Specialists working on heritage buildings is never just another project. It’s a responsibility.

From national landmarks to hidden historic spaces, each building carries a story that deserves to be revealed with care, precision and restraint.

We’ve had the privilege of contributing to lighting projects at:

• Somerset House
• Freemasons’ Hall
• Illuminate Rotherhithe – Mayflower 400 Celebration
• The Wren Café
• Fleet Street Quarter (Artefacts Museum)
• Market Cross
• The Queen’s Turret
• Lincoln’s Inn
• Nursemaids Tunnel
• Armourers’ Hall

Every site presents its own complexities, listed status, conservation constraints, structural sensitivity, and the delicate balance between modern performance and historic integrity.

Our approach remains consistent:
1. Design with restraint.
2. Install with precision.
3. Maintain with long-term stewardship in mind.

When done well, lighting doesn’t compete with heritage architecture, it quietly reveals it.

If you’re planning works on a listed or historically sensitive site, we’d welcome the conversation.

A sensitive lighting intervention inside St Nicholas Cole Abbey, rebuilt in 1672 by the office of Sir Christopher Wren.

With lighting historically limited due to the building’s significance, the brief was to improve levels and efficiency without disturbing architectural integrity.

Phase one introduced carefully specified LED uplighting and discreet source upgrades to suspended pendants, enhancing vertical illumination, revealing material richness, and supporting the café’s modern use, all while respecting Wren’s original spatial intent.

A reminder that in heritage settings, the best lighting is often the least visible.
If you’re working on a listed or historically sensitive project, we’d value the conversation.

Design | Install | Maintain - Lighting up history.

Lighting with care. Designed with excellence. ✨

We had the privilege of upgrading the Chapel lighting at Queens’ College, Cambridge, enhancing the space with a modern lighting solution while fully respecting its historic character.

The result is a Chapel where architectural detail, craftsmanship, and atmosphere are gently revealed, not overshadowed.

Projects like this reflect what matters most to us at CES: thoughtful design, careful delivery, and a commitment to excellence in every detail.

Lighting design, installation & maintenance, across sectors that matter.

Our dedicated team at CES Lighting & Electrical Specialists works across a wide range of environments, delivering thoughtful lighting design, careful installation, and long-term maintenance, always tailored to the character, use, and heritage of each space.

Here’s a snapshot of how that plays out across key sectors:

🎓 Education
From historic campuses to contemporary learning environments, we support education spaces with lighting that enhances focus, safety, and architectural intent with clients such as Cambridge University.

🏛️ Heritage Buildings
Sensitive, conservation-led lighting that reveals history without overpowering it such as our involvement at Somerset House.

⛪ Ecclesiastical
Churches and cathedrals require a balance of reverence, beauty, and function. We’ve been privileged to contribute to spaces like All Souls Langham Place, working with light that supports worship and architecture alike.

🏢 Public & Professional Spaces
From galleries to institutions, we design lighting that serves people and purpose, including projects at the Royal College of Music.

Across every sector, our approach remains the same: Design. Install. Maintain.

Lighting that respects context, enhances experience, and stands the test of time. To see more examples of how we work across these sectors, visit our portfolio on our website and explore our approach to lighting design, installation, and ongoing care.
