Artist, Illustrator and quiet emotional world builder. My work lives somewhere between pattern, memory and feeling. I use colour and drawing as a way to slow things down and make sense of the world when it feels too loud. I came to art through necessity. After years of living with undiagnosed CPTSD, drawing became a calm place i could return to again and again. What began as a private way to cope slowly grew into something i could share. Today my work moves across illustration, pattern and storytelling. Each piece is made gently and with intention. I think of it less as decoration and more as atmosphere. Something to live with rather than simply look at. Freda Lilly is a soft space for sensitive people. For thoughtful interiors. I’ve been longing to share this one with you. Enchanted Orangery is one of my Pixie Nouveau designs, a little love letter to Art Nouveau and the fairy stories I grew up with. I drew every pixie by hand, wings, curls, pearls and all, and set them among scarlet poppies climbing those beautiful curving stems.

I’ve popped her into a few rooms to show how she could live in a real home. The bathroom blind with the fairy lights is my favourite, I could happily soak in that bath forever. Which room would you put her in?

Life has felt very full lately, and I don’t think I’m the only one. When everything is busy and hectic, I’ve learned how important it is to have somewhere to escape to, even if it’s just one room, or one corner of a room, that feels calm and a little bit magical.

That’s the story behind Interstellar Bloom. I wanted to draw a night sky you could curl up inside: crescent moons, golden clouds, glowing lanterns and blooms drifting through deep midnight blue. I’m fully aware that for some of us summer hasn’t quite let go yet, but Halloween is nearly upon us, so I’m going to embrace it!

Some of my favourite memories happened around a table. Not the fancy occasions, just ordinary evenings that somehow stuck: candles burning down, bread being torn and passed round, everyone talking over each other. I think that’s the quiet magic of pattern. A tablecloth doesn’t make the memory, but it sets the scene, and years later it’s the thing you see in your mind when you think back to that night.

I couldn’t resist bringing this one back out as the nights draw in. Enchanted Wings Dark is the moody little sister of my Enchanted Wings pattern, every butterfly drawn by hand and then let loose into the dark.

I’ve popped it onto a ball gown, an oversized fluffy hoodie and a bag to show how differently it can behave, from full spooky glamour to sofa witchcraft. This is me, in a sling, giving a thumbs up, having learned a lesson the hard way.

Over the summer I kept saying two things. The first was that I needed a break, which I have never once managed to give myself in all the years I've worked for myself. The second was that my children are grown and busy and I was hardly seeing them.

The universe heard both and got straight to work.

It gave me the break by spraining my bicep. I was not doing anything heroic. I was spinning my three year old granddaughter round the garden because she asked me to. A sprained bicep, by the way, is a real thing. I'd never heard of one either.

Then, while I was sitting there unable to draw, it sent that same granddaughter to stay for nearly a month. I wished for more of my family and it sent me all of them at once in the body of someone who does not understand the concept of resting an arm.

I got both things I asked for. I chose neither of the delivery methods.

This week's essay is about that, and it ends with a question I'd really like you to answer. What is your universe? Is it a god, the world, some entity out there with a list, or is it you?

This is me in the summer, drawing Engspioner with a hand that worked perfectly and that I never once thought about.

I watched it back last week with my arm in a support and it knocked the wind out of me a bit. Not because anything dramatic happens in the video. Because nothing does. I'm just drawing, easily, the way I always have.

Three weeks ago I sprained my bicep. Not doing anything heroic, I was spinning my granddaughter round the garden. And just like that, the thing I do every day became something I had to ration.

The part that really got me is that my Self Talk mantra ends with the line I rest without guilt, and I've been repeating that for months while never once actually doing it. So my body sorted it out for me, considerably less gently than I'd have liked.

Don't take the easy bits for granted. They are the whole thing.

A small thing I wanted to share today.

I have been out of action for a few weeks. Four of them with a three year old staying, two with a sprained arm, and somewhere in the middle of all that the creative part of me just went quiet. Not dramatically. It is never dramatic. You just sit down at your desk and find there is nothing there, and then you spend the morning scrolling your phone feeling vaguely useless about it.

If you have ever been off work for a stretch, through illness or caring for somebody or just life getting loud, you will know exactly what I mean. The getting back is harder than the stopping.

So yesterday I did the only thing I know that reliably works, which is to go outside and pick up stones. I have done it since I was a child and I am still doing it at forty one and I make no apologies for any of it.

Then I got home and looked at the photo properly. Ochre. Rust. Chalk white. Warm stone. Grey. A scrap of dark red seaweed. It is the same palette I have been using in my work all autumn and I had never once thought about where it came from.

It was not gone. It was just outside, waiting for me to go and get some air.

Well, this one is out in the world now.

Lappeteppe means patchwork quilt in Norwegian, and it is my entry for the Spoonflower patchwork challenge. What makes it different from the rest of my work is that I did not draw anything new for it. Every block in it is a design I had already made this year. The doily mandala, the botanical with the cabbage whites, the rust damask with the little birds, the painterly leaves. I took the whole lot and stitched them into one cloth, seams showing and all.

The reason for that is a sprained bicep. It has been sore for weeks and drawing has been slow going, so rather than fight it I went looking through what I already had. Four weeks with a three year old in the house did not leave much studio time either, so honestly the timing worked out.

And it taught me something. A back catalogue is not finished work sitting in a drawer. It is material.

My favourite thing in this design is a small sign that says BEWARE HUMANS.

Because that's the point of it. Hallows Eve Toile isn't frightening, it's just a normal evening in a town where the pumpkin folk live and we're the ones they warn each other about. There's a chap on a bench with a cup of tea. There's a mum pushing a pram with a ghost baby in it. There's a child dressed as a skeleton for Halloween, which is a lot of commitment when your head is already a pumpkin.

And yes, there is a pair of legs sticking out from behind a gravestone. I'm not going to explain that one.

I've mocked it up as a tablecloth for a Halloween supper and as a pair of boy's pyjamas, and I now want both.

Humans eat dead mushrooms. Mushrooms eat dead humans.

I drew this last Halloween and I still think it's the most honest thing I've ever put on a t-shirt.

It's a nice reminder that I don't only draw repeating patterns. Most weeks I'm making wallpaper and fabric, but now and then a drawing just wants to be one picture on a black shirt and that's a completely different job.
