Gilliflower Pottery Gilliflower Pottery is a small, independent Cornish company that creates sustainable pottery. Gilliflower Pottery is named after our orchard in rural Cornwall.

In 2014 we planted a new apple orchard, with handpicked varieties of delicious juicing apples. One of these is the exquisite and now rare Gilliflower apple, a Cornish native. We also converted a dilapidated outbuilding to a pottery studio, where I have my wheel and kiln. Just like growing trees, making pottery can't be rushed. And just like the fruit, every piece is slightly different and unique i

n it's own right. It is important for me that my pots are grounded in my surroundings, and leave as small an environmental footprint as possible, so I use local clay from only a few miles away, and mix my own glazes. I recycle every bit of leftover clay and use a efficient kiln, supplied by a sustainable energy supplier. I take inspiration from the changing seasons reflected in the birds and the trees in the garden, and the round-bellied African beer pots I grew up with in South Africa.

It’s a good thing there is only one comedian in our family and it most certainly isn’t me. But I couldn’t resist and I wanted to show you this John Dory salad bowl which I’m rather fond of. It’s lovely and generous for large salads ( or other dishes) and beautifully decorative when not in use. I was thinking scones when I made these: a funky little hand-formed plate, and a bowl (or two) for the jam and cream. My daughter suggested it would be good for olives (and pips) as well, which is true. Although the mugs may be not be quite the thing for the wine… Anyway, you get the drift. I'd appreciate your thoughts about the plate - would you use one like this? And what would you put on it!?

Thank you so much to all of you who bought pots after my most recent shop update! These are some of the pots that were snapped up, mostly by my amazing newsletter subscribers and I'm so thankful for your support. I feel a bit bereft now, with some of my favourite pieces gone, but I'll be starting all over again soon. I have a few pieces left to glaze before I add several new stoneware pots to my shop. I'm particularly fond of the little plate and am contemplating making a more of them - all slightly different, but with the same general motifs. What do you think - shall I have a go? Nothing in pottery happens quickly - the evolution of these fireflower cups took 3 years or more! It coincided with me growing more confident as a potter, and feeling more able to 'strip back'. Although, if you know my work, you'll know that 'stripped back' is not exactly my middle name… A batch of these fireflower cups have just made it to my website if you'd like to have a closer look.
