Back at our desks today, working through emails and supplier queries for our projects, with Paris still very much on our minds.

Here are the highlights from the trip.

We went for leisure and it turned into work, as these trips tend to. We looked for antiques for current projects and fitted in a new project meeting between the galleries. The interiors exhibitions followed, with ornate plasterwork and a viola marble fireplace beneath ceilings tall enough to stop you in the doorway.

Our Paris office is currently a café table near the antique markets.

The fashion gave us the most to think about, in texture as much as colour, and some of it is already shaping new fabric schemes.

A bedside in our Grade II listed Chelsea townhouse.

We lined the walls in a textured covering and carried the same tones reversed into the woven geometric headboard. The travertine lamp and the pale grained timber of the bedside sit a shade either side of it, which leaves the blue of the cushion as the single stronger note.

Friday, at the Decorative Fair in Battersea.

A few pieces stayed with us longer than most. A pair of dog portraits, the kind of thing that could easily tip into kitsch and somehow doesn’t. A run of tapestries with exactly the worn, faded colour that no new piece can fake.

Both the sort of find that ends up being the reason a room feels collected rather than decorated.

Our Art Deco apartment in Hove, presented and signed off.

We took the client through the full scheme yesterday, and nearly everything was approved on the spot. Construction begins this year, with completion set for 2027.

A confident, considered interior drawn from the building’s own period. More to come as it takes shape.

On Friday the three of us spent the day at The Regency Town House, Hove House in Hove with its curator, Nick Tyson, as part of our CPD with the BIID | British Institute of Interior Design .

Number 13 Brunswick Square was completed in the 1820s as part of Charles Busby’s Brunswick estate, built for families who came down from London for the season. Nick has been restoring it since the 1980s. The day moved from cornices and paint into how the house was actually used, room by room and hour by hour, down to how each colour was chosen for each rooms uses.

Two doors along, the basement of number 10 is the last intact service floor on the square. The range is still in the kitchen, and the w**e cellar door still carries traces of its sealing wax. Standing in it makes sense of the rooms upstairs.

The Trust is working to secure the mews and stables behind the house, and funding pressures mean the basement at number 10 may have to be sold. If you’d like to support their work, details are at rth.org.uk.

Room Notes, episode two.

The principal bedroom of our Grade II listed Chelsea townhouse.

There had been a fireplace here once, taken out long before we arrived. We could have reinstated it. We didn’t, since putting it back would have invented a history the room no longer had. Instead the bed went where the chimney breast would have been, which freed both alcoves for the client’s own art and objects, and let the wardrobes disappear behind the door.

The palette came from the yellow brick outside, softened slightly so the room reads wider than it is. Cornices and window frames stayed white, original, and left alone.

Not everything that’s gone needs putting back. Sometimes the gap is the more useful thing.

Back in the studio after a week of showroom visits during Focus at the Design Centre in Chelsea Harbour. Our sample library is updated.

Before we file everything away, we lay the samples out together. Away from the showroom displays, we can compare patterns at different scales and see how colours sit beside other materials.

Some combinations are already informing upcoming schemes. Others we’ll return to when the right project comes along.
