Why we use antiques and vintage pieces in our projects.

They sit well in a period setting almost without trying, and they hold their own just as easily in a contemporary scheme, adding a depth and history that nothing new quite manages. They tend to carry more character, and choosing something already made is simply a more sustainable way of designing.

Some of it is about restraint too. Genuinely detailed, hand-finished pieces are harder to find than they used to be, which is exactly why it’s worth stopping when you do.

And more often than not, when a project is finished and a client tells us what they love most, it’s the antique in the room. Not the newest thing in it, the one that already had a history.

The kitchen in our Grade II listed Chelsea townhouse sits in the basement, once the service floor, which is why there is very little architectural detailing here, unlike the rooms above it.

That gave us room to be contemporary. The majority of storage in the kitchen is concealed, with the exception of this cabinet, housing the client’s glassware, creamware and everyday dinnerware in full view. In a compact room, closed cabinetry would have boxed the space in. Glazed cabinetry keeps it visually light.

The guest bedroom in our Sussex coast apartment didn’t have much to work with.

The room had been reconfigured over the years, made larger at some point, and what was left was long and narrow, with very little original character to draw from.

So rather than restore something that wasn’t really there, we built character into it instead. Pattern, colour, and enough of both to give the room a personality it hadn’t had in a long time.

A day of sourcing rarely goes to plan, and it is usually better for it.

We started at a local bespoke kitchen showroom, checking finishes and hardware against the drawings for an active project, working alongside the manufacturer to relay our exact design intent. Samples on a table only tell you so much. They need to be read against the actual plans before anything is confirmed, and against a certain amount of scepticism from whoever is holding the tile.

From there, a reclamation yard, on the hunt for a fireplace with a bit more history than the one currently sitting in our Hove apartment. We didn’t leave with one. We did leave having found a statuary marble surround with its original tiles still intact, and a vintage car we had absolutely no use for but admired at length regardless.

Some days are about finishing a decision. Others are about starting to notice one, and occasionally about standing in a yard admiring a car that has nothing to do with either.

Meet the team. Anthony, Architectural Design Lead.

Anthony is the first person in any building we take on. Fifteen years at senior level on listed townhouses and period houses, mostly across Chelsea, Mayfair, Knightsbridge and South Kensington, and a Registered Interior Designer with the BIID.

His approach doesn’t really change from project to project. Study the building before you touch anything. Most of what’s worth keeping is already there, you just have to look properly.

We have been busy preparing for a client meeting next week, and this is part of how we get ready for it.

Every scheme starts individually, laid out so it can be judged entirely on its own terms. Then, in parallel, we bring everything together, every room, every scheme, on the same neutral ground.

Keeping everything separate allows us to see each room clearly, while laying the schemes alongside one another lets us read the house as a whole.

You find out very quickly when something doesn’t sit comfortably alongside everything else.

By the time a client sees any of it, every room has already been tested against the rest of the house.

Before & After, the primary bedroom in our Grade I listed Chelsea townhouse.

The room had been modernised at some point, but with very little left in it. Grey throughout, minimal, cold, a space that wasn’t being used for much beyond sleeping in.

What’s there now is soft gold and blue against crisp white, layered with new furnishings chosen specifically for the room rather than picked from a generic scheme. Warm and colourful, and still entirely in keeping with a townhouse of this age.

The living room of our Sussex coast apartment, from concept to finished room.

The process started with a series of concepts then an architectural elevation of the space, working out the proportions and the logic of the room before a single finish was chosen.

From there, the scheme developed through hard finishes, sisal, oak flooring, burr walnut, alongside fabrics from Warner House , The Pure Edit , Beata Heuman and SOANE BRITAIN building toward a palette anchored by a claret red that runs through the room and into the chandelier.

The joinery came next, a custom piece built primarily to house the television, but designed to hold and display the client’s own accessories too, rather than disappear once its main job was done.

What follows is the room finished.

The guest room on the top floor of our townhouse in De Beauvoir Town.

We went warm on the walls, Farrow & Ball Jitney, a sandy tone suited to the lower ceilings up here. The room already has its own natural blue hues being north facing, so rather than warm the whole space further, we let that blue become the accent colour instead. Fermoie fabrics, Lalique accessories, and architectural prints finish the room off subtly.

The palette followed what the room’s own light already gave it.
