Inscribed to back, Mrs Hayden, Claremont Cottage, Esher, Surrey possibly a cottage on or near the historic Claremont Estate in Esher, Surrey, associated with the estate around Claremont House. The Claremont estate contains a number of lodges, cottages, and estate buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Early 20th Century Oil Painting ‘Atmospheric Rural Landscape, Cottages by a Lake’ Signed F.E. Jamieson £380

English, oil on canvas, sitting in a glazed decorative gilt frame. In good antique condition, some age related craquelure to paint (see photos)

Francis E. Jamieson (1895–1950) was commonly known for his Scottish landscapes and loch scenes. Jamieson lived on the south coast of England and was contracted to a large department store to supply them with his paintings. The artist often signed with pseudonyms such as ‘Phil Hips’, ‘Graham Williams’, ‘W. Richards’ and ‘Arnold Pienne’, in order to reach a wider audience, whilst also selling his work ‘door to door’. Jamieson’s work was often in a traditional Victorian style and his pictures were reproduced as postcards by Ajelli and Co of London in the 1920’s.
