Sometimes, the biggest difference a home can make is not how it looks, but how naturally it fits around the way people actually live. From a kitchen made for cooking and gathering to calm bedrooms, practical bathrooms, and intuitive joinery that works with tricky corners, every space supports the small routines that make up the day. Modern, functional details keep the home feeling easy to use, without losing the character that makes it feel personal.

A garage was completely reworked into an entertainment suite connected back to the living room, with new stud walls, floor levelling, underfloor heating, and rerouted plumbing, gas, and electrics all needing to work together from the beginning.

A project like this renovation can quickly become more complex than expected, especially once layout constraints, storage, lighting, heating, and structural changes all start overlapping in one space. By planning each element together from the start, the space was able to function properly as part of the home rather than feeling like a separate add-on.

Herringbone-pattern engineered walnut flooring and joinery add character and comfort throughout the space, with 3D walnut cladding wrapping the staircase and bar fronts, alongside storage for the familyโ€™s album collection, a turntable nook, wine fridge, and concealed lighting. From the outside, it still looks like a garage. Inside, it becomes a place for music, hosting friends, or spending time together with family.

This bedroom is framed by bespoke joinery and an integrated bedside cabinet, making the start and end of the day feel more settled. In the living space, floor-to-ceiling walnut joinery, brass detailing, stone tops, bifold doors, and open shelving create a room that can shift easily from focused work, to switching off, or hosting friends in the evening.

In the kitchen space, a glass-front cabinet adds another layer of storage and character, keeping essentials close without crowding the room. The joinery is thoughtfully crafted for the flat, making each part of the home work harder, whether itโ€™s getting ready in the morning, clearing the space before people arrive, or putting things back at the end of the day.

Before a project like this begins, the pressure is often already there: timelines, different trades, structural work, and the challenge of making big changes without losing what people already love about the space. At Fish Union in Chislehurst, the brief was to completely rework the ground floor, remove the old fish counter, reinforce the floor for a bespoke stainless-steel bar, relocate plumbing and electrics, and create a restaurant and champagne bar that still felt familiar to regulars, all within four weeks.

Occhio's modular lighting system helped shift the atmosphere through the day, combining ambient, task, and accent lighting around service, while the open bar design created a more natural space for the guests to converse. The space now feels ready for its next chapter, somewhere people drop into casually and end up staying longer than planned.

Our clients wanted a garden that could be used comfortably throughout the year, not just on warm days, so the covered seating area was designed as the heart of the space. It creates a cosy, practical place for slower mornings, evenings with friends, and weekends spent outside with family.

Layered planting schemes add character, while walkways help the different zones connect naturally. Lighting was carefully thought through, too, keeping the garden welcoming and functional after dark.

Designed in collaboration with Lucy Welsh, the space brings together garden design, thoughtful craftsmanship, and full project management to create an outdoor setting that works beautifully for everyday use and time spent together.

The ground floor needed both order and warmth for this property, as the spaces felt disconnected, and everyday essentials had nowhere obvious to go.

A bespoke hallway cabinet and panelling were designed to anchor the space and define the transition between rooms, while premier-grade herringbone flooring was used throughout to tie the spaces together underfoot. Colour, texture, and finish were layered carefully to work with the scale, rather than against it.

The ground floor now supports the rhythm of daily life, making it easy to move through in the morning and comfortable to spend time in by the evening.

A quieter part of the home, where the day naturally slows at the start and end. In the master bedroom, a soft tonal palette and joinery, including integrated staircase storage and a wardrobe, keep everything in place without disrupting the space. Textiles and lighting bring in a gentle contrast, supporting both early mornings and quieter evenings. The ensuite follows with wood-effect finishes and warm metallic details, creating a more relaxed, luxurious feel, with materials chosen to handle daily use while keeping things calm and organised.

The feel of the place stays familiar for regulars, but behind it, everything has been reworked. A full rip-out and structural changes allowed plumbing and electric services to be relocated, with the floor reinforced to carry a new stainless-steel bar. The original fish counter was removed, and the layout reshaped around a bar and dining area, bringing the space together in a more practical way. Completed within a four-week time frame, it now supports smooth service while still feeling comfortable to sit and spend time in.

As evening sets in, the focus shifts to the covered seating area, with lighting creating a quieter place to sit and spend time. By day, the space feels more open, with layered planting schemes and paths leading naturally from one corner to the next.
