🔥 SECOND JOB OF THE DAY — BADBY 🔥

Back over to Badby today to get this one finished off 👌🏽

We actually started this job last week, but unfortunately the customer hadn’t been supplied enough tiles to complete the chamber… 12 tiles short! 🫣 So once the extras arrived, it was back today to get everything wrapped up.

On this one we:

🔨 Widened the existing opening by 8” overall
🧱 Installed a new concrete lintel
⬛ Fitted a Kadapha black limestone hearth
🤎 Installed the customer-supplied ‘Hartley Sand’ tiles from Topps Tiles in a herringbone pattern

Now for the stove story…

When the customer purchased the property, there was already a brand-new flue liner installed, with an unconnected Portway Arundel sitting in the opening.

Not my favourite stove, if I’m being truthful 😬

But sitting out in their summer house was a Dik Geurts Ivar 5 Low… 👀🔥

In my opinion, the Dik Geurts is the more superior stove, so there was only one thing for it — swap them over! 👌🏽

The Ivar now takes pride of place in the house, and I think it looks absolutely spot on against those herringbone tiles. 😍

Sometimes it’s not about supplying everything brand new — it’s about looking at what the customer already has and making the best use of it.

🔥 BLISWORTH TODAY 🔥

A slightly different one today, and a good example of why listening to the customer is so important.

The customer had already received a quote from another company, whose plan was simply to rip the whole fireplace out and open everything up.

But that wasn’t what the customer wanted.

Sometimes it’s not about pushing what you think they should have — it’s about listening to what they want, giving the right advice and finding a solution that works. 👍🏽

So, we kept the existing surround and hearth, removed the old clay fireback and open fire, lined the chimney with a new flue liner and installed this Arada Solution 5 inset stove. 🔥👌🏽

Of course… it couldn’t all be straightforward! 🫣

Up we went in the Height for Hire cherry picker — cracking bit of kit 👌🏽 — only to discover someone, in their wisdom, had set the chimney pot directly on top of the mid-feathers, leaving the old open fire trying to draw through roughly a 3” square hole! 😳

I mean… it’s not rocket science really, is it? 😂

Pot reset correctly, chimney sorted, stove installed and, most importantly, the customer gets the look they actually wanted without unnecessarily ripping out a lovely existing fireplace.

🔥 BRAUNSTON INSTALLATION 🔥

A lovely transformation in Braunston today, and a great example of working with what’s already there rather than ripping everything out! 👌🏼

The customer wanted to keep their existing stone surround, so we adapted the installation around it. The original back panel header was repurposed to create the inner hearth, helping everything tie together nicely.

For the chamber we went with reclaimed brick slips laid in a herringbone pattern 🧱 — loads of character and a cracking contrast against the lighter surround.

Well… that’s my part completed 👍🏽☕️

A productive Bank Holiday giving the coffee shop a much-needed little freshen up!

🎨 Fresh couple of coats of paint
✨ Woodwork all glossed
🪵 New shelves fitted
🪧 New signs up
☕️ And most importantly… that all-important NEW drinks menu! 👀

Amazing what a bit of paint, some new touches and a few hours of peace with the radio for company can achieve! 😂

The ladies are back in tomorrow and will be busy printing the new food menus, with the new menu boards ready to go too.

Still a few finishing touches to come, but it’s already looking so much fresher. 👌🏽

Nice to have a change and freshen things up once in a while!

Now I think I’ve earned myself a coffee… ☕️😂

BANK HOLIDAY VIBES… 🎨☕️🔨

While everyone else is hopefully enjoying a nice relaxing Bank Holiday… apparently I thought decorating Mrs B's Coffee Shop sounded like a good idea! 🤣

A bit of painting, decorating, new signage and a few changes underway to give the place a fresh new look ready for reopening tomorrow. 👌🏽☕️

There’s definitely something to be said for working alone though…
Radio on 🎶, nobody asking questions, nobody distracting me… and somehow I get twice as much done! 😂

Still plenty to do, but it’s starting to come together nicely.

👀 Keep your eyes peeled for the finished product… plus the extras the girls have planned 👍🏽

Now, back to the paintbrush! 🖌️

🔥 WOOD BURNERS — LET’S TALK FACTS! 🔥

There’s a LOT said about wood-burning stoves online… so rather than opinions, let’s look at some actual facts. 👇

🔥 MODERN WOOD BURNERS ARE HIGHLY EFFICIENT

A good modern wood-burning stove can achieve efficiency figures of around 80% or more depending on the appliance.

Compare that with a traditional open fire, where a huge proportion of the heat disappears straight up the chimney!

🔥 DRY WOOD = MORE HEAT

This one really matters.

Wood should be 20% moisture or below. Dry, properly seasoned wood produces more useful heat, burns more efficiently and produces less smoke than wet wood.

Wet logs waste energy simply boiling off the excess water before the wood can burn properly.

🔥 MODERN STOVES ARE A WORLD AWAY FROM OLD OPEN FIRES

A modern stove is a controlled combustion appliance.

The enclosed firebox and carefully controlled airflow allow the appliance to extract far more useful heat from the fuel than simply burning logs on an open fire.

🔥 THEY’RE GREAT FOR TARGETED HEATING

Sitting in the lounge on a cold evening?

Instead of relying solely on heating the whole house, a stove can provide powerful, direct heat exactly where you’re spending your time. 🔥🏠

🔥 BUT LET’S BE HONEST…

Wood burning isn’t emission-free.

Anyone telling you otherwise isn’t giving you the full picture.

But there’s a massive difference between an old open fire burning poor-quality wet timber and a correctly specified, modern stove burning clean, dry wood and being operated properly.

That’s why the appliance, installation, fuel and how you use it ALL matter.

We’d much rather give our customers the facts and help them choose the right appliance for their home than make wild claims just to sell a stove.

🔥 NOT EVERY JOB IS STRAIGHTFORWARD… AND SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO SAY “DO NOT USE”. 🔥

It’s not very often we have to condemn an appliance, but on this occasion I genuinely believe doing so may have prevented something far more serious.

What was originally booked as a simple chimney sweep quickly turned into something completely different. 😳

On inspection we discovered a serious build-up of thick tar deposits, with the flue heavily restricted/blocked. The customer had also been burning incorrect fuels at incorrect temperatures, resulting in the deposits you can see in these photos.

🔥 This is exactly the sort of build-up that can present a serious chimney-fire risk.

And with neighbouring properties close by, the potential consequences simply aren’t worth thinking about.

Needless to say, the appliance was immediately labelled DO NOT USE. ⛔️

The customer has been made fully aware of the seriousness of the situation and why the stove must remain unused. We’ll now look at the installation as a whole and work out the safest and most appropriate way forward.

A chimney sweep isn’t always just about putting the rods up, giving it a clean and moving onto the next one. Sometimes what we find means we have to make a decision that a customer might not want to hear — but safety will ALWAYS come first.

These photos are also a pretty good reminder of why:

🪵 Burn the correct fuel
🔥 Burn your stove at the correct operating temperature
🧹 Have your chimney professionally swept and maintained regularly
⚠️ And never ignore signs that something isn’t right.

Nearly 30 years in the fireplace and stove trade and you still come across things that make you stop and think…

I don’t think the “simple sweep” that was booked is going to suffice on this one! 🫣

It’s never all straightforward.

Early bird catches the worm, so they say! 🐦😂

Van dropped off bright and early at 6:40am this morning for its MOT at vinetreeautomotive 🚐🔧

Big thanks to the wife for getting up early & picking me up… because that would’ve been a VERY long walk home otherwise! 😂🚶‍♂️

Back home now for the important stuff… ☕️🥯
A proper latte and a decent breakfast before heading back out for a full survey day.
