SB Woodcraft and Design formally known as Hebridean Peat Crafts

SB Woodcraft and Design formally known as Hebridean Peat Crafts SB Woodcraft and Design is a collaborative Father and Son project established in 2021. The resulting material is known as Hebridean Composition©.

Based in the heart of the Cotswolds our aim is to continue the local tradition of designing and creating a wide range of high quality, unique, hand made items. SB Craft and Design Info to follow...

Hebridean Peat Crafts was based in the picturesque village of North Tolsta on the North East Coast of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides and were set up in 2013 by local Craftsman Steve Adams aide

d by Craft Makers Awards from CNES and assistance from Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Local Business Gateway

Steve Adams has a background of over 35 years in a variety of craft based disciplines including ceramics, joinery, ornamental or fibrous plasterwork production & restoration and antique picture frame restoration. He has worked in the past for the National Trust and English Heritage on the restoration of many of the decorative aspects of listed buildings all over the UK

The concept behind Hebridean Peat Crafts is an expression of many of Steve’s previously acquired skills making use of traditional materials and techniques utilizing both traditional and modern designs to produce a wide range of craft and fine art items. All the hand crafted items made by Hebridean Peat Crafts have at their heart locally sourced hand dug peat that is over a 1000 years old. It is then naturally processed and combined with other traditional and 100% natural materials. The origins from which Hebridean Composition© has been developed go back several centuries, many examples of which still exist to this today exhibiting its durability and long life, so ensuring that you will be able to enjoy your Hebridean Peat Craft items for many years. Each item is individually pressed into hand made molds to produce anything from Jewelry and Buttons to decorative and unique fine art objects. Hebridean Peat Crafts are always happy to collaborate with other craft makers in the application and design of this uniquely Western Isles material in a wide variety of craft mediums including textiles and jewelry. Quite pleased with the end results from these two Recycled Pine Boxes, the wood for which was part of an old Edwardian Chest of Drawers that had long outlived it's usefulness and beyond viable restoration.

Both boxes are roughly 8 inches square with solid lids and bases, so have a nice weight about them, one has a single tray insert and lined with royal blue felt and the other has two tray inserts lined in classic green felt. They have both been finished with multiple layers of natural bees wax polish to a deep sheen.

Seems to be all about boxes recently.... So having tortured some old pine with clamps and vices, toped and tailed them and got as far as a 1st coat of Danish Oil on one of them, more as a coat of protection than a finish btw, these 2 8inch square boxes are coming along nicely 😊

Trying something new today, y'all know how I love a challenge 😁.....My 1st ever Traditionally made Shaker Box, have started small with a wee 4inch model, to learn the techniques. So one has the formers made. the top, bottom and sides cut out and ready to go. Now I just need to bring it all together to figure out how that all goes...... 🧐

April 12th----Bit of an update, have got a far as knocking up a water trough to soak the box slats but stalled while sourcing and now waiting for the right sized copper tacks to arrive before one can join the whole thing together....Watch this space! 🙂
