Victorian Metamorphic Oak Davenport Writing Cabinet – c.1880

A particularly unusual and beautifully constructed Victorian metamorphic Davenport writing cabinet, dating to approximately 1880–1900.

Crafted in richly figured oak, this compact piece cleverly transforms from an attractive enclosed cabinet into a fully functional writing desk. The hinged writing surface opens to reveal a beautifully fitted stationery compartment with graduated pigeonholes and vertical divisions for letters, papers and writing materials.

The writing surface is fitted with an aged tooled leather inset, while the substantial oak construction continues throughout, including the panelled sides and rear. Beneath the writing compartment is a useful open storage area.

The combination of its compact proportions, excellent oak, fitted interior and ingenious design makes this a particularly interesting example of Victorian cabinetmaking.

A wonderful piece for the collector of Victorian furniture, antique desks and mechanically ingenious metamorphic furniture.

A Fascinating Antique Desk Piece

ANTIQUE SCOTTISH HORN & SILVER-PLATED INKSTAND / DESK STAND

A wonderfully unusual and highly decorative antique desk accessory, combining a naturally formed animal horn, ornate silvered metal mounts and a clear glass ink reservoir.

The horn is beautifully shaped, retaining its natural colour and texture, with an unusual axe-shaped terminal. The upper section incorporates an elaborate pierced and engraved metal gallery supporting the original-style glass inkwell, complete with a silver-coloured hinged or screw-top cover.

The ornate decoration, including scrolling foliage and classical detailing, gives the piece a distinctly Victorian period character and makes it as much a decorative object as a functional writing accessory.

✨ A superb conversation piece for collectors of antique desk furniture, writing equipment and unusual natural-history objects.
