1940's Make do and mend project.

Mum's been darning her favourite socks, which are now ready for wearing again.

She used a thin wool yarn for her darn, which means it will felt together with wearing and washing becoming even stronger.

Hopefully you will be encouraged to have a go. Try not to get hung up over how they look when you've done. They are going to be in your shoes or boots no one's going to see. It really is easy if Mum and I can do it then anyone can.

You just need simple things to start, a darning needle and some wool, 100% wool is best even if they are not woolen socks. You can buy darning wool from haberdashers or on line if you don't have anything suitable.

You sew in straight lines. Mum went across forwards and backwards first to cover the hole making sure her stitches started on the undamaged part of sock. Then go up and down weaving the wool in and out again making sure you starting stitches are on the undamaged part of your sock. Little tip don't knot your wool to start just leave a little end which you can trim off latter. Keep weaving in and out until your happy the hole is both covered and strong enough to do the job.

You can darn anything using the same principles but if it's your favourite jumper you will need to work a bit harder and take more care if you want an invisible darn.

Make do and mend. Mum found a little reproduction 1940's booklet.

We thought we would have a go at one or two things over the next few weeks. Keep watching to see how we get on.

The flounder is finished and it's made a lovely knee patch on the jeans. Covering up the split in the material nicely. The photo shows it and the photo I used for inspiration.

I read something this week that said stretch jeans like these take a long, long time to decompose. These one's are already approximately 8 years old so they have already done well. But if I can make them last just a little bit longer, I won't feel quite so bad when they eventually go.

Anyone can have a go at making there own patch. I used embroidery but you can use anything there's no wrong way to do it.

The jean saga happened again this week when the other leg decided to come apart 😡

Well this time I laughed instead of loosing my cool. So I thought flounder! Why not and here is my flounder underway. Happy stitching this weekend everyone.

Can you believe I got cross with a pair of old jeans 😂

I spent ages mending them and first wash they split. I think they've trying to tell me something but I'm not having it ❤️

So they have been mended again probably for the last time! If you fancy having a go at embroidered mends, you can buy kits to help you which look great but I decided to go freestyle.

My wild fish are a bit of a laugh really but there is a serious side to it. If we can keep clothes out of landfill by looking after them with a bit of mending. Washing a little bit less, using natural fibres, buying less and buying better. Mother nature will thank us.

Mark making on fabric is another form of creative expression which fits alongside the scroll Mum's already finished and showed on a previous post.

This time Mum didn't really intend to start this sort of project. The initial purpose was to learn a new stitch technique which didn't go as planned. Rather than start afresh she decided to continue to practice the technique using the initial stitching to create patterns on the fabric.

Mark making on fabric by stitching lines or dots in a controlled or uncontrolled way can give you stunning results.

Mum's going continue to create this piece using the green threads she has picked out. Not sure how its going to turn out that's the exciting thing about stitching.

Just to reassure you we are using thrifted material for these stitching projects. The burgundy was a skirt lining and it's been backed by the green curtain lining used on the scroll to make it more robust.

I will be sure to share it with you when it's done so keep following to see more. I hope some of you will give this a go. You need very little in terms of resources some fabric, some treads and a needle you don't need an embroidery hoop although they are handy. Look in your local charity shop they may have some for a few penny's.

Learning new skills. I love a notebook and a few years ago (BC-Before Children) I spent many a happy hour drawing, planning and writing in my notebooks I even made one for Mum.

It's Mum's turn this time, she's been wanting to learn how to cover notebooks in woolen fabric. The blue one is the first attempt. It's padded and covered in a light woolen fabric. In Mum's words "for a first go it's not bad but the inside is not very neat and the wool is stretched a bit too tight to allow the book to close properly" .

The purple one is the second attempt it's neater on the inside and not padded this time. It closes well but "the corners need improvement" . Mum thinks and I agree that this is probably due to the tweed used. The Harris Tweed is less flexible than the wool used on the first notebook.

Mum does have a small amount of lambswool tweed which might be perfect but I doubt I will prise it out of Mum's stash.

Mum's planning to cover a another notebook should she do a padded or unpadded one? Please leave a comment and let us know.

Be bright and be seen on the beach.

We have been asked to make some fingerless gloves to go with the neon fishing hat we previously made for our family member who goes beach fishing.

It's really important to wear bright colours when you are on or near the sea. If something happens to you, you are easier to see. Potentially helping responders to get to you more quickly.

We are thinking that a neon range of knitwear and clothing accessories might be a good idea for anyone who needs to be seen and keep warm. What do you think? is this something you might be interested in? Please drop us a comment and let us know know.

In the meantime we will be darning ends ❤️

Mending, it's not my first thought when I get up in the morning nor is it exciting but when you have little one's it's inevitable unless you are just going put things in the bin.

So I'm thinking that I should learn from my Mum. This pair of jeans are quite elderly anyway so no harm done if it all goes wrong. I blame my Mum's genetics for the shape of my thighs (she blames hers) so it seems all of our trousers end up a bit thin in the thigh department. 🤣

We have had a go at strengthening the seams by darning with a thread as close to the colour of the denim as possible. We used simple running stitches, going up down and across. Looks like it should work, we will let you know how it wears and how much longer the jeans last before they give up completely.
