1940's Make do and mend project.
Mum's been darning her favourite socks, which are now ready for wearing again.
She used a thin wool yarn for her darn, which means it will felt together with wearing and washing becoming even stronger.
Hopefully you will be encouraged to have a go. Try not to get hung up over how they look when you've done. They are going to be in your shoes or boots no one's going to see. It really is easy if Mum and I can do it then anyone can.
You just need simple things to start, a darning needle and some wool, 100% wool is best even if they are not woolen socks. You can buy darning wool from haberdashers or on line if you don't have anything suitable.
You sew in straight lines. Mum went across forwards and backwards first to cover the hole making sure her stitches started on the undamaged part of sock. Then go up and down weaving the wool in and out again making sure you starting stitches are on the undamaged part of your sock. Little tip don't knot your wool to start just leave a little end which you can trim off latter. Keep weaving in and out until your happy the hole is both covered and strong enough to do the job.
You can darn anything using the same principles but if it's your favourite jumper you will need to work a bit harder and take more care if you want an invisible darn.
