QV 1840 Penny Black. The Maltese Cross was introduced 6th May 1840 to cancel the 1d black (Penny Black) and the 2d blue (Two Pence). However, In February 1841 the colour of the 1d value (Penny Black) was changed to red, which required the cancellation be changed to a black ink.
