A little look behind the scenes of curating Samhain.

Over the last few days I’ve been making some very difficult decisions about our maker line-up.

The response to Samhain was incredible. We received far more applications than we could accommodate, from such a strong mix of artists, designers and craftspeople.

Curation is about so much more than choosing the work you love. It’s about looking at the collection as a whole, balancing disciplines, materials, styles and price points to create an event that feels varied, interesting and full of things to discover.

And sometimes that means saying no to brilliant work.

To everyone who applied: thank you for trusting us with your work and for wanting to be part of what we’re creating. Whether or not we’re able to bring you into the Samhain story this time, I’ve genuinely loved discovering what you do.

Emails will be heading out very shortly.

And then comes the exciting bit… introducing you to the makers who’ll be joining us at The Haberdashery this Samhain.

There’s so much more behind something handmade than the finished object.

It’s the years spent learning a skill. Knowing how a material behaves. The experiments that didn’t quite work. The small decisions made along the way. And the hands of the person who actually made it.

That’s why craftsmanship sits at the heart of The Makkist.

We want to make it easier to discover genuinely well-made, independent work and to give the people behind it a platform that values the skill, process and story just as much as the finished piece.

Because choosing handmade isn’t just about buying something different. It’s about choosing to support the skills, knowledge and independent makers we want to see continue.

And we’re always looking to discover brilliant makers.

Know someone whose work deserves to be seen by more people? Tag them below we’d love to find them.

We’ve got some brilliant workshops beginning to take shape, with plenty more still to reveal.

And right now, maker applications are open.

SAMHAIN

This autumn, we’ll be transforming a beautiful Glasgow venue into a weekend celebrating making in all its forms. Bringing together a thoughtfully curated market, creative workshops and opportunities to connect, learn and discover.

One of the things I've always wanted The Makkist to become is more than just a marketplace.

I want it to be a place where makers can discover opportunities, learn new skills and support one another as creative businesses.

So when opportunities come along that I think could genuinely help our community, I'll be sharing them.

Our friends at House On Legs are currently running a Crowdfunder to upgrade their tech and, as part of it, they're offering an exclusive product photography package for The Makkist community.

If you're preparing to launch a website, update your online shop or simply want stronger product images, this could be a brilliant opportunity.

📷 10 professionally photographed products for £150 (£15 per additional item)

📍 Studio based in Glasgow city centre

Every booking supports House On Legs' Crowdfunder while helping independent makers present their work professionally.

It's a perfect example of creative businesses supporting one another, and that's exactly the kind of community I hope we're building together.

More details are in the slides.
