🐴 🪱Worming & Worm Egg Counts:
Are You Staying One Step Ahead? 🪱🐴
With the warm temperatures and wet conditions we’ve been experiencing recently, parasite larvae can thrive on pasture, increasing the risk of horses picking up a worm burden. This makes now an ideal time to review your horse’s worm control plan.
🌱 Why are Worm Egg Counts (WEC) so important?
Regular worm egg counts help identify whether your horse actually needs worming, allowing for a targeted approach rather than routine treatment. This not only protects your horse’s health but also helps reduce the growing problem of wormer resistance.
A high worm burden can lead to:
❗ Weight loss
❗ Poor coat condition
❗ Reduced performance
❗ Colic and digestive upset
❗ General ill health
✅ Our top tips for parasite control this grazing season:
🔹 Perform regular worm egg counts
( We offer in-house WEC)
🔹 Only worm when necessary based on results and risk assessment
🔹 Remove droppings from paddocks at least twice weekly
🔹Avoid overgrazing and overcrowding fields
🔹 Rotate grazing where possible
🔹 Ensure all horses on the yard follow a sensible parasite control programme
Remember, effective parasite control isn’t just about reaching for a wormer—it’s about using the right treatment at the right time.
