Love show business? Then the BADA Friends visit to Angels Costumes is a must. Established in 1840, Angels has continued to supply award-winning costumes to West End productions, movie and TV sets as well as Madame Tussauds. With over one million pieces organised across eight miles of hanging racks, there will be much to enjoy and discover on this private tour of the world’s largest costume house.

What should you look for when buying a painting and how can you assess its quality, condition and value? 🖼️

Continuing our ‘How to Buy’ series, featuring expert advice from BADA members on buying within their specialist fields.

In our latest article, John Bennett of BADA member John Bennett Fine Paintings John Bennett Fine Paintings explores important considerations when buying a painting, from choosing a work you truly love and buying from a reputable source to understanding condition, attribution, historical significance and provenance.

Paintings are different from other categories of antiques in that they are not utilitarian, their function is solely to delight and to give pleasure in a decorative sense. One can admire the craftsmanship of furniture and some pieces of silver for example as well as use them in every day life but these are not the functions of a painting.

A George II period mahogany side table, from the collection of BADA member Christopher Buck Antiques. Christopher Buck Antiques

Of small proportions and exquisite form, the table features a superbly figured overhanging top above two short and two long drawers, all with the most remarkable fire-gilded handles. The shaped frieze is decorated with scrolled leafy ornament, while the cabriole legs are carved at the knees and beyond with trailing acanthus, terminating in circular pad feet.

A Chinese porcelain lavender blue glazed vase, from the collection of BADA member Marchant. Marchant Asian Art

Of fluted baluster form, the vase features eight petal ribbed lobes, the central bulb above a gently waisted splayed foot and beneath a slightly flared rim, the interior glazed white, covered overall on the exterior in a rich and even bright lavender blue glaze, pooling and thinning at the ridges and flutes, the base unglazed revealing the pure biscuit body.

17 inches, 43.2 centimetres high.

From the BADA Friends Director:

September begins next week and the BADA Friends have a varied selection of events organised for this month. The programme kicks off on Thursday 10th September with a Zoom lecture to celebrate what would have been the 100th birthday of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Popular lecturer Nicholas Merchant will discuss how, coming to the throne in 1952, Elizabeth II inherited a Royal Collection which had been buffeted by the upheavals of the Second World War. Buckingham Palace in particular suffered bomb damage and was in a parlous state.

Throughout her reign, not only has this sad state been completely reversed in Buckingham Palace, but every other Royal Residence has also been totally refurbished and made available to a wider public. Furthermore, under a succession of highly skilled curators, the collection has been extensively catalogued, recorded and conserved.

A fine pair of mid nineteenth century red verre eglomise mirrors, with scrolling gilt foliate decoration, with shaped cresting and gilt lead mounts to the borders throughout. After Burchardt Precht. From the collection of BADA member Tarquin Bilgen. Tarquin Bilgen

Burchard Precht (1651-1738) was a sculptor and cabinetmaker from Bremen, trained in Hamburg by his brother Christian Precht (1635-1694). He established his workshop in Sweden, arriving there in 1674 to participate in the work undertaken at Drottningholm Palace and was appointed court sculptor in 1682.

The shape of Scandinavian mirrors and the use of beaded borders reflect his taste for France, which he visited with the court architect Nicodemus Tessin in 1687-1688. Furthermore, the characteristic presence of this type of pediment, with its double C-shaped scrolls and fruit baskets, as well as the use of gilt lead, is typical of his work.

A pair of 18th century white-painted pedestals, from the collection of BADA member Hawker Antiques. Jamb London

Of iconic Chippendale form, the pedestals feature paterae and swags beneath gadroon-moulded edges, with elegantly tapering reeded square columns terminating in square blocks adorned with stylised fasces detail.

Dimensions: 130.5 cm high × 33 cm wide × 33 cm deep.
