A rare 16th-century kinrande vase from BADA member Jorge Welsh Works of Art. Jorge Welsh Works of Art

Only a small number of Chinese porcelain vases decorated in the kinrande style are known. A faceted vase with kinrande decoration is preserved in the Ataka Collection at the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, while Fujio Koyama has illustrated another example from the Hakutsuru Art Gallery. A related square vessel with a truncated neck and metal attachment around the rim, now in the Art Institute of Chicago, was originally a vase of a form comparable to the present example.

The exhibition brings together antiquities, works on paper and early photography to examine the art and material culture of ancient Egypt, as well as its later study and documentation. Spanning antiquity to the modern era, the exhibition traces how Egypt’s monuments, objects and history have been preserved and understood across time.

A magnificent sancai-glazed Buddhist lion from the collection of BADA member Rasti Fine Art. Rasti Fine Art

The lion is seated on its hind legs and facing forward, the head with bold features of bulging eyes, a flat nose, long thick eyebrows and pricked-back ears, with fangs protruding from each side of the mouth. The back of the head has a long band of curled hair. The lion wears a collar with suspended bells and decorative bushy tassels, while the back features an elaborate tied tassel. The legs and claws are powerfully depicted, with all details very finely defined.

China, Ming dynasty, 15th century.
Height: 147 cm (57¾ in)

From the BADA Friends Director:

The BADA Friends Director was in Surrey this weekend and could not resist a short diversion to Compton to visit the Watts Gallery. Nestled in the charming Surrey countryside, the Watts Gallery is a wonderful place to see Victorian art. Not only does it house a collection of paintings and sculptures by George Frederic Watts, but there is a gallery dedicated to William and Evelyn De Morgan as well.

Also within the complex, there is an exhibition space and currently on show is a very charming and interesting exhibition entitled The Art of Wallpaper: Morris & Co (21 May 2026 – 10 January 2027).

Cross the country road to visit Limnerslease, home to George and Mary Watts, and you can then discover in the woodland behind the house Watts’ amazing equine sculpture, Physical Energy.

Then a short stroll down the lane takes you to the Grade I-listed Watts Memorial Chapel, created after the death of G. F. Watts by his wife and potter, Mary Watts. This Grade I-listed chapel is covered with clay tiles and houses some extraordinary wall paintings.

It was then back to the café for a reviving cuppa and to make some purchases in the shop! A wonderful way to spend a day.

BADA member Mark Hill joins Evan Davis on BBC Radio 4’s The Bottom Line to explore the business of antiques. Mark Hill

Alongside auctioneer Catherine Southon and SellingAntiques.co.uk founder Conor Hannah, the dealer, author and lecturer discusses how the trade operates, from salerooms and dealers’ shops to online marketplaces.

The programme set out to ask how the trade really operates behind its familiar television image. The discussion ranged across the whole industry: how antiques come up for sale in the first place, how auction houses and dealers each make their living, how buying and selling has moved online, and whether the version of the trade seen on television is an accurate one.

The panel also took on a question for the future: whether anything manufactured today will last long enough to be auctioned in a hundred years‘ time.

An Iznik dish from the collection of BADA member Amir Mohtashemi. Amir Mohtashemi

It has a flanged rim decorated with a cobalt blue strip and overlapping white prunus blossoms. The well is decorated on a ground of white slip with red carnations blooming from a tuft of grass. The snapped stems of the carnations represent a move towards naturalism, typically observed from circa 1565 to ca. 1585.

Above that, two large blue flowering palms, in the form of feathery saz leaves, frame a bouquet of red prunus blossoms. Both the flowering palm and the bouquet motifs emerged in ca. 1565, this latter reflecting contemporary trends in Ottoman embroidery.

From the BADA Friends Director:

The BADA Friends had a fabulous evening yesterday at the Maas Gallery, where BADA Friends Chairman Geoffrey Munn, OBE, MVO, FSA was ‘in conversation’ with mudlarker, geologist and palaeontologist Dr Alessio Checconi.

It was a captivating evening hearing about mudlarking and the history behind the items that Dr Checconi has found on the shores of the Thames. There was lots of fun and laughter too.

A big thank you to both speakers for making it a most memorable evening. Thanks also to Rupert Maas for allowing the BADA Friends to invade his beautiful gallery in St James’s.

Robert Young Antiques is pleased to present TAKE A SEAT, a new and exclusive group exhibition bringing together 13 selected contemporary artists, each invited to create a previously unseen work exploring the theme of the seat - or their own interpretation of one - rendered in their own unique style.

Every work in the exhibition has been made expressly for this event and the brief was deliberately open: artists were asked to respond to the idea of a seat, whether literally or conceptually, filtered through a raw, individual sensibility. The results span an unusually broad range of media, including painting, ceramics, textiles and photography, reflecting the diversity of approaches the artists have brought to a shared starting point.

Taken together, the works trace the many ways a single, familiar object can be reimagined: as form, as symbol, as surface, and as subject.

TAKE A SEAT runs from 2-10 October at Robert Young Antiques, London, with a Private View held on 1 October, 5-8pm.
