The Rainbow window has made me think about this suncatcher, and how a few years ago I'd planned to run my very first workshop, I booked a venue, bought several sets of tools and materials and convinced six willing guinea pigs to give it a try. ❤️

Then the first lockdown started and everything was cancelled. ☹️

Six years later the tools are still in a box and I never did run the workshop.

I still get asked fairly frequently if I teach people to make glass items, and it is something I'd like to do. But it's scary!

Part of the process involves scalpels and razor blades - what if someone cuts themselves? What if people are expecting to make a traditional church-style stained glass window and are disappointed that it's not that? What if I'm useless at explaining things and everyone gets frustrated?......

Plus the materials are relatively expensive so I wouldn't be able to do a budget-priced workshop.

But it's something I think I should look into more, and I'd appreciate your thoughts, especially if you've done other craft workshops in the past.

What do I need to consider when putting on a workshop? Any venue suggestions? What's the best group size? What do workshops generally cost these days? Any other advice gratefully received!

Did you guess??? 🤔

The old metal window I showed you a few days ago has been transformed into a glorious rainbow, complete with iridescent hearts!

Such an unusual project, I can't wait to see what my lovely customer has in mind when it comes to displaying this colourful creation!

I still have some colourful Brighton Palace Pier mirrors available, created using wood salvaged during maintenance work on the pier. 💙

They are wall hung, and are suitable for either inside or outside display.

Each one is unique, a limited collection and comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.

They could make a perfect gift for anyone with an association with Brighton or the pier in particular.

One of my lovely customers recently found this unusual window at an antiques yard, and asked me if I could create something with it for her home. 🤔

I'm always up for a challenge, so of course I said yes, and it's currently on my workbench having a transformation (or 'glow-up', as my daughter would call it!)

I'll show you the after pics when it's finished, but would anyone like to hazard a guess as to what I might be doing with it??

'Lacuna' is a design for those who like things clean and simple, but still with a splash of colour. 🩵

This one has circles in a slightly iridescent green, a bit like butterfly wings.

As most of the design is in the corner, there's plenty of space for use as a practical mirror.

I can make these in most sizes 40x50cm and above, in any colours, and with the design in whichever corner you prefer.

A very large and colourful recent commission for a four part window set, located on the ground floor of a house. 🧡

We decided on quite a dynamic abstract design with lots of movement and vibrancy. Most of the colour is concentrated at the top, to maximise the effect of the sunshine (see the wall on the left in the first picture) while still allowing the plants and garden wildlife to be observed lower down.

The other photos show progression of the design from drawing to workbench.

I took a trip to Manchester last week, travelling by train, and for the first time since 1998, went through Stoke on Trent where I did my degree in Glass Design all those years ago. 🧡

Sadly, like most of the Glass departments in the UK, the one I attended at Staffordshire University closed down years ago.

It's a real shame, as it was a fantastic course that gave me the opportunity to learn lots of different glassmaking techniques, from enamelling and lustres (which I loved) to glassblowing (which I absolutely hated, far too hot, heavy and required strong arms and lungs!), sandblasting, sandcasting, etching, fusing, slumping, casting, pate de verre and much more.

Here's me in my graduation clobber, and some of the pieces I made for my degree show - far less colourful than my current work!

Happy International Dog Day!! 🐶

I have to admit, dogs do get a bit neglected when it comes to my mirror designs, and there's a simple reason for this...

Whereas most domestic cats can be categorised by colour - black, tabby, tortoiseshell etc, so I could probably represent the vast majority of the cat population in a collection of about 10 designs, dogs have SO many variations.

Lots of different breeds, from Chihuaua to Great Dane, Spaniels, all the variations of Doodles, Alsations, Labradors, Border Collies, Pugs, Boxers and many more, then many colours and markings within each breed. I'd probably need a few hundred design options to get a decent representation of all your canine furry friends!

But here are a few dog mirrors I have created over the years - some are more detailed images within standard designs, but the commissions usually work best with a back view.

This has on several occasions resulted in hilarity when making surprise gifts, as the person commissioning the mirror tries to sneakily get a good photo of the dog's bottom so I can ensure the tail is the correct length and colour!!! 😂

Sometimes a window cries out for lots and lots and lots of colour! 🩷🩵❤️💚💛🧡

If the 'view' behind is just a boring wall, or perhaps the neighbour's garage or an overgrown row of leylandii trees, why not go all out with a whole rainbow of different hues?

It makes a really impactful feature that your visitors will remember for all the right reasons, and sunlight will make the beautiful vibrant colours shine all around your room!
