The Hungry Gourmet

The Hungry Gourmet Real Food. Really
This is an attempt to amalgamate, my love of "bouffe" and "boisson" in one place a In 1998 with the aim of educating myself, I moved to the US.

Born in India, I am a well-traveled guy who now calls London home. I spent almost a decade there traveling across the vast nation, experiencing all that the country had to offer before moving to the UK for work. Now I call the British Isles my home!! Growing up I have always been extremely inquisitive about anything food. Earliest memories were much-anticipated trips to the prisoners garden in Lag

os, Nigeria. Here you could pick produce grown by the inmates, or avidly watching my dad plucking and skinning chicken in the backyard. Over the years, I began to wrap my life around everything food and beverages. Bar tending my way through college, I started creating cocktails and couple of them were also published in The Bartender Magazine in the US. After a few years in the silicon valley doing marketing in the start-up world, I moved into the industry I was most passionate about. I worked for a company that ran 5 restaurants and a packaged food manufacturing plant, running marketing and operations. My love for food soon got me involved in all parts of the business, and I soon became a “un-certified sommelier” and designed the wine list for 2 of the restaurants. The experience gave me a better understanding of the science that connected food & drinks. In 2007 I was helping a friend in India set up his restaurant and designed an entire vegetarian menu. I also started writing food and wine reviews for the Indian Express a leading national newspaper. Work in 2008 brought me to the British Isles, where I have now settled. The local ales were an eye opener for me. Over the years, I have researched (well drunk and it’s a lot of hard work :-)) the ales of the Island. I now think many of these ales pair amazingly well, with Indian food rather than the typical lager. The passion for food continues, and combined with my love for travel across Asia, the middle east and Europe continue to inspire me. This is an attempt to amalgamate, my love of “bouffe” and “boisson” in one place and share them with fellow enthusiasts. So what will I be posting? My views on food, my opinions of restaurants and some information about my supper club. I hope you enjoy it and will keep coming back to see what’s new on my mind.

Everyone talks about Tam Vi - .tamvi - a 1 star restaurant in and of course we had to give it a go. Set in an old Vietnamese tea house, the food is rustic & real tasting but cooked with high quality. We went for the tasting menu and some of the dishes were absolutely indulgent but some could split the table. The village style mud crab soup is not one for everyone - you really need to appreciate food cause it very earthy. The pork belly with egg, veggies with the shrimp dip and the tofu was spectacular. The desserts we tried were eye opening - especially the tofu curd with Jasmine syrup.

I’ve always loved two things: bringing people together and being in the kitchen (with good food, of course!). Starting Flourish has let me do both — and honestly, it’s been a dream.

One of the best parts? Getting to collaborate with incredibly talented chefs, especially my amazing family.

Here are some highlights from a recent event with the wonderful Ping — I had an absolute blast being her canapé chef and sharing the kitchen with her. So much fun, so much flavour, and so many hilarious moments!!
