Decorator Jewels Interior painting, decorating, upcycling and design aesthetics When I left school my first job was with John Lewis Partnership (Heelas) in Reading Berkshire.

Hi my name is Julie and my friends call me “Jules” I am a female interior painter and decorator based Nr Honiton in the heart of East Devon. I have in excess of 20 years’ experience of interior painting, decorating and décor aesthetics and a City and Guild qualification in interior decorating and paint effects. From a young child I always had an interest in art and being creative and I excelled

in the arts and crafts field. Encouraged by my art teacher at the age of 12 I entered a national Welsh art completion and came 3rd, I also entered country fayre craft competitions and I was awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd in all my entries. Whilst I was there I had an opportunity to join the Display Team creating shop window displays. Using a variety of tools I gained a lot of experience in prop making and design aesthetics which enhanced my creative abilities. Following this I was successfully employed as a display artist for Heals and Son (Tottenham Court Road)/ Terence Conran Group (South Kensington) in London where I did further display artist training and eventually I was responsible for the interior and window displays in Heals of Reading. Retail is an ever evolving business and Display Art became less and less required when large scale graphics were introduced so at this point I changed career to office work. My interest in interior décor did not dwindle so decided to evidence my skills and abilities and I enrolled on a City & Guilds interior decorating and paint effects course. For 2 years I attended night classes at Swindon Tech College and successfully completed my course in 1999. My qualification lead me to a Part Time job with Crown Paints demonstrating Crown decorative products across the South West. I also represented Crown Paints and wall coverings at Trade shows, BBC Good Homes and the annual National Home Exhibition (earls Court). Over the years and in my spare time I have continued to build and perfect my interior decorating. I have decoratively renovated two properties along with a variety of ad hock projects for family, friends and neighbours. I enjoy upcycling old furniture or repurposing items that would be thrown away; such as old curtains or soft furnishings. My next training adventure will be enrolling on a local Upholstery course, this will widen my interior skills further. When I moved to Devon in 2018, I was lucky to get an office based job straight away but when the Pandemic hit in 2020 and like many others I was made redundant. Well I’m not the kind of person to let the grass grown under feet so I decided to do what I love, Interior Decorating and I’m now the proud business owner of Decorator Jewels…. Services:

Interior painting and decorating, feature walls, bespoke paint effects, Upcycling and (upholstery once I have completed the course)

Personal statement:

I pride myself in producing quality work; I like my customers to feel confident and happy whilst I work within their home. I’m a bit of a perfectionist so if it’s not good enough for me it’s not good enough for you. Whilst working within your home I will take every care to protect your home furnishings and leave my working area clean and tidy. I’m a Non smoker but partial to a nice cup of tea now and again while I work. Jules ;-)

Do you have a UPVC door? You can change the colour! The best method by far is to thoroughly clean/degrease and lightly sand the plastic door giving it a key for the primer to adhere too. The best primer by far, tried and tested is Zinsser B.I.N shellac; once it’s painted on to the UPVC it adheres really well and gives you a great base for your choice of gloss, satin or eggshell. I personally recommend exterior oil based paint for it’s long lasting weather resistant qualities…. So if you’re colour bored of your front door/back door or any UPVC trim…. Change it!! If you’re unsure about doing it yourself contact me for a quote 😉

Morning…. I haven’t posted any project recently but I have been busy! I rescued a lovely hand carved teak lampstead from the tip! It had been left outside in all weathers, the base had split, pole was wonkey and the electrics de-funked. With a little care, wax, new electrics and a lovely William Morris handmade lampshade from Etsy (my favourite shop!) I now have a beautiful lampstead saved from the dumpster!
