“You won’t like it.”

Probably not what you expect your interior designer to say when you tell them what you want 😳

When I first met my self build clients, they told me they were building this home to “see them through”.

A home designed for the long term. Practical, considered, but still full of personality.

One of the finishes they’d been drawn to was microcement. Mainly because of the practicality: seamless, minimal joints and easy to clean.

But after stepping into their current home and getting a feel for their style, I knew straight away and had to bring it up.

‘’You won’t like it’’

Not because there’s anything wrong with microcement. But because their current home was filled with character, colour, antique furniture and just life! I knew they needed more character than a large expanse of one finish was going to give them. And also noting that a newer build wont bring with it the original architectural details to counter it.

So instead, we took what they liked about the idea. The practicality and ease of living and found some clever ways to give these bathrooms depth.

A feature tile that brings in tones from the landscape surrounding the property, adds a little flair and gives the space a finish that feels completely bespoke to their home, while not compromising on the practically of microcement where it matters.

Sometimes i dont feel that busy then do a post like this and wonder how i survive 😆

Right now we have

-Gorbals project deep in install and we are handling furniture procurement. The custom pieces are to DIE for
-Saltcoats underway with walls up, first fix electrics and plumbing done
-2 commercial jobs at the early phases. Both working on layout ideas
-Home Consultations scattered in there ✨

I worry that we dont share alot of finished photos sometimes but the reality is that it takes alot of time to get there. Some of these projects have been going since Spring and Saltcoats over a year!

Its SHOW time !!

Today is the day our building team start the internal works at my Saltcoats project

Im beyond excited! Ive been here over the past week stripping it out and Ive been feeling immensly proud to be taking this project on

This is more than a renovation, we are turning an old office derelict for 8 years + into a flat, bringing a much needed home back into the housing market in North Ayrshire

Its been a massive project for me to take on, with lots of firsts and already facing many challenges. But that is the point and the reason i chose it, to expand my knowledge through the doing. The end plan is to keep this property to rent out and generate another income.

Now my trust is passed over to the building team, LETS GO

Ive attended multiple events over the years, sat in on the panels and listened to the experts.

But what isnt spoke about is the genuine conversations that evolves between the audience and the stage. Homeowners, businesses all trying to figure out what the next step is. Being able to relate the another persons problem, or actually having the solution to solve it.

That’s why I built A Night with Afta. Avenue of inspiration, a panel of experts and a design ready environment where homeowners and industry pros can have those conversations, not just watch them happen from the stage.

Take a closer look at how we started off our project in the Gorbals.

Space planning and zoning, used in every room but more so in an open plan space looks at how each area should be used and how they all connect. Without zoning, its just one big empty box, but with it you have decided: this space is for cooking, eating, relaxing. And then everything build from this once you have identified the use.

Let me know if you like this style of content and we can do it again to share the next phase of the process which is identifying a strong concept to match the brief and tying in colours and furniture.
