Vaughan Designs

Vaughan Designs Classic British Lighting. Having previously been dealers in decorative antiques they fully appreciated the sort of lighting that was needed.

Michael and Lucy Vaughan founded Vaughan Ltd in 1983 to meet the demand in the interior design world for stylish and classical lighting made to the highest standards. The business has grown considerably in the last 20 years enabling Vaughan to expand from lighting into other decorative areas such as furniture, needlework and fabric which are now integral parts of the business. The overall aim has

always been to manufacture the very best in terms of craftmanship, 'good taste' and authenticity. The rate of product innovation is high and large numbers of new products are introduced every year. Vaughan's London showroom at G1 Chelsea Harbour Design Centre displays our entire range in a realistic decorative setting. Our experienced sales team is led by Nicci Myatt and our opening hours are 9 - 5.30, Monday to Friday. The Vaughan warehouse in London is situated at Units 17 and 23 Carnwath Road Industrial Estate, London SW6 3HR and includes a small showroom in Unit 17 selling a selection of discontinued and damaged stock. The Vaughan New York showroom was opened in 1996 and is situated in central Manhattan in the D & D Building. The American business is headed up by Victoria de Lotbiniere who has been with Vaughan since 1987. Across the States, Vaughan is represented in many major cities (please see list of US showrooms under locations button). In Europe, Vaughan is represented by agents or directly through interior design companies. A full catalogue is available for purchase from any of our showrooms

A room-by-room guide to layering lighting at home

Our lighting guide walks you through the fundamentals of layered lighting, showing how to use ambient, task and accent lighting to create rooms that feel balanced and composed.

What is layered lighting?
Layered lighting is the practice of combining multiple sources of ambient, task and accent light at different heights, angles and positions around a room, giving you the flexibility to shape atmosphere, highlight what you love and adapt your space throughout the day.

Think of friends' houses, hotels or restaurants you love. How do they make you feel? Relaxed? Welcome? Energised? That's down to layered lighting - the difference between a space that's illuminated purely for function and one where lighting is part of the design language and atmosphere.

Layered lighting also showcases considered design choices. The grain of wood, the pile of a rug, the texture of oil on canvas are enhanced by light that skims their surfaces - rather than hitting them head-on - throwing their details into relief. A curator's tool, as well as a way to define mood.

Park Avenue meets English countryside.

Sean Symington dreams up a Withdrawing Room in partnership with Zardi & Zardi for this year's WOW!house.

The design is inspired by the Georgian withdrawing room: a space in days gone by where you could literally withdraw after dinner to play cards, drink champagne or gossip with friends.

When catching up with Sean he explained he was drawn to our fittings for this space in particular. "I really like the classicness of it, the finishes are really good and it fit with the brief - it's exactly what you'd imagine in a Park Avenue apartment," he says.

The Carrick Leaf Wall Lights and Exton Mirror in a charming farmhouse living room designed by Khaya Studio.

Inspired by an earlier Vaughan design, the Carrick Leaf Wall Light pairs sculptural elegance with delicate leaf detailing, beautifully framing the statement fireplace. Above, the Exton Mirror nods to 1940s design with its subtle sunburst motif and flowing silhouette, adding warmth and refinement to the space.

An exquisite entrance hall designed by VSP Interiors, where layered textures and curated antiques create a truly welcoming first impression. This interior features an early Vaughan Collection Imari Table Lamp.

“The lamp is by Vaughan Designs. I love it's elegant shape and antique porcelain quality, which works beautifully across so many of my projects. We paired the Imari Table Lamp with a bespoke shade made from antique silk to create a softer, warmer glow. It sits perfectly within my overall design language, which is rooted in heritage, layering and antiques.” — Henriette von Stockhausen, designer.
