A room-by-room guide to layering lighting at home
Our lighting guide walks you through the fundamentals of layered lighting, showing how to use ambient, task and accent lighting to create rooms that feel balanced and composed.
What is layered lighting?
Layered lighting is the practice of combining multiple sources of ambient, task and accent light at different heights, angles and positions around a room, giving you the flexibility to shape atmosphere, highlight what you love and adapt your space throughout the day.
Think of friends' houses, hotels or restaurants you love. How do they make you feel? Relaxed? Welcome? Energised? That's down to layered lighting - the difference between a space that's illuminated purely for function and one where lighting is part of the design language and atmosphere.
Layered lighting also showcases considered design choices. The grain of wood, the pile of a rug, the texture of oil on canvas are enhanced by light that skims their surfaces - rather than hitting them head-on - throwing their details into relief. A curator's tool, as well as a way to define mood.
