I'm conscious it's not always the easiest day for some, but I wanted to share something that recognises amazing mothers and I love these wise words from Marmee March 🩷

International Women's Day ✨🌸🕊️
It's had me reflecting today on what I admire most in women: quiet strength. Resilience, perseverance and self-assurance that doesn't shout for attention or seek to prove itself to others. Is calm, patient & humble. This is what I strive for!
So here's a little moment between mother and son, quietly sowing some seeds that will grow into strong little plants 🌱

Happy St Piran’s Day! To my fellow Cornish pards 🍻🥟 (👈🏽 Is that actually a pasty emoji?!)

Originally a holiday for the tinners which mostly involved over-induldging in food and alcohol for the week running up to it! It’s commonly observed nowadays in many Cornish communities with parades and dancing from the school children… which inspired a painting I began last year and finished just the other week!

Featuring views inspired by our beautiful Tin Coast which I love SO much and the colours of spring wildflowers adorning the landscape, whilst capturing the dancing I watch my children join in with, Cornish tartan neckerchiefs and Cornish choughs.

It’s available as a print now and I’m giving you 20% off this week! Just enter the code SP20 for it to automatically apply during checkout. Offer ends on Sunday 8th March midnight.

It was about time I painted my daughter and her beloved (& borrowed) pony: Moon 🌝🌸

He’s actually our lovely neighbour’s pony, but they very generously welcome her to treat him as her own and she spends a lot of time caring for and doting on him 🤍✨

My little helper 🤍✨🌱
After a beautiful Saturday here in Cornwall, spent in the garden, I decided to paint this image of our youngest who loves to potter around and help when he can. Even if that means carrying a rake twice his size!

And here we are, at the 7th and final illustration for the 'Championing Children' project I've been working on for
This was the most detailed of all the illustrations and I went back over a few things, changing direction and to make alterations. I think it's my favourite one, in it's own way. The area it's for is 'Creativity'; encouraging children to consider how they creatively use their knowledge, experience, skills, tools & resources available to them to support their learning. Rebecca suggested having some shelving that displayed lots of what children would find in their classrooms, and I absolutely loved sketching out all the different books and supplies. My own children love looking at it too 🤗
It's been such a joy and honour to collaborate on this amazing resource and I'm excited to follow along on its journey.
✨🎄Merry Christmas!🎄✨

On to illustration no.6, the penultimate painting of the project. This one was all about 'Resilience & Determination ' and my most immediate thought of how to portray this was running a race. It brought to mind primary school sports days and cross country races, again, something children can relate to within their school environment. But more than this, it had me ruminating on the essence of resilience, and showing someone who is going to keep on pushing even when something feels difficult and it'd be easier to give up. The lad running out front in this race looks very comfortable, but it's the little one behind who is determined to keep on going. (I had to change his expression as he was looking a little menacing rather than determined 😅) In a world that feels increasingly anxious, I personally feel this is such an important area for our children to be encouraged with and exercise/sport can be such a relevant classroom for teaching it.

The fifth illustration I worked on for 'Championing Children' was all about 'Relationships & Leadership'. Rebecca pointed out that group work is currently a significant challenge in schools, so to portray this we decided to have one of the children looking completely uninterested in the task. Once I'd finished the initial sketch I noticed that the little lad who looks fed up was completely out of scale with the other two.. 🙈 But with some clever editing after I'd scanned in my painting, I was able to get it looking right. For the task I went with the classic bicarb & vinegar volcano experiment...one I reckon we can all relate to! 🌋

Another day, another illustration.
This was my fourth painting for the project, portraying 'Communication'. Something we can really struggle with as adults, let alone as a child! In Rebecca's resource, it encourages children to think about things such as how they express and share their ideas; ask questions and listen to others. So with this in mind, I went with the image of children working in a group and discussing what they're doing with their teacher. Some are looking very engaged, others...not so!
I was so chuffed with the little boy and girl on the left, but the little one in the middle was bothering me every time I revisited the painting, so I treated him to a new head!

Just realised a bit too late that I've not shared today's illustration 🥴
No.3 for the project was all about 'Managing Feelings'.
Again, the idea came quite quickly and after one initial sketch the painted followed along seamlessly.
The emotion in this one felt extra important and I really hoped it would portray someone struggling with their feelings whilst the other was keenly aware, showing kindness & consideration to his struggle.
I loved painting this one, it felt effortless and I really enjoyed adding the detail of his bag on the step.

Following on from yesterday's post, here is illustration no.2 for Rebecca's 'Championing Children' primary school resource, for the area of: 'Planning & Problem Solving' ⚡
The idea for this one came quite easily as I envisioned children constructing with wooden blocks, planning how to build and solving problems as they arise. The ex*****on took a little longer though..!
For whatever reason, I had trouble with the expressions on the two boy's faces, changing them a few times as I went until in the end I completely re-painted the boy on the left (from the waist up), using my son as the model for his pose 😂 Much happier with how he looks now!
