Jess, her Grandmama and I spent the morning creating our own homemade bird feeders using things we found around the house as moulds. Cardboard pots, yoghurt tubs, cookie cutters and even a few old lids became perfect little shapes for stuffing with seed mix. They don't need to be complicated at all.
🐥
We also made some bunting style feeders using apple slices. Jess was very proud of those, and kept holding them up to the window to see which birds might visit first. All perfect for this weekend's Big Garden Birdwatch.
🪶
A quick safety note. If you make these at home always use 100% peanut butter with no added salt or sugar. You can also use lard or coconut oil to bind everything together safely for wildlife.
🐦‍
They turned out so sweet and we cannot wait to hang them up and see who comes to investigate.

Kicking off week in our house by gathering up our garden bird books 🐦
These are a few of our favourites at the moment, with plenty more scattered around the house ready for reading, spotting and chatting about who we might see outside.

I’ll be sharing more inspiration this week for simple ways to weave garden bird learning into your days ❤️

A quick and easy halloween craft that’s wildlife focused.
Here’s how to make your own:
1️⃣ Simply make two black handprints and cut them out.
2️⃣ Cut out a black skittle shape for the body
3️⃣ Stick the handprint wings on
4️⃣ Stick on a triangle beak and some eyes!

We’ve been getting spooky over here with corvids. The perfect spooky Halloween wildlife!

There are so many out and about right now, all gathering together in their groups for the winter. So they’re an easy spot whilst driving and walking around right now.

Did you know?
🪶 The raven is our largest corvid, with a wingspan even larger than a buzzard!
🪶 Jays are very shy and are notorious for collecting and burying acorns around about now for the winter.
🪶 Crows can recognise human faces, solve puzzles and even use tools.
🪶 Crows can live up to 17 years in the wild.

Which is your favourite corvid?

All of these ideas were either using craft items we already have, using one bat postcard and my printer. Library books were hunted down and borrowed and the brown playdough came out.🦇

If you have any questions about how I provided these learning activities for Jess, let me know below! 🦇

I hope I understood the assignment 😆

Jokes aside, she's loved this set up. She's in her jam jar era and I'm here for it. So I've set up lots of loose parts play. Books to look at, poems to read together and we've already done some super fun handprint bats and hanging toilet roll bats!

The bat silhouettes were super easy to cut out. Just look for a free silhouette template online. They are great for padding out her display.

It brings me so much joy giving her the set ups she asks for. Yes they get messy and trashed within minutes... but that's the point isn't it? They are set ups for her to enjoy, not just look at.
