Do Sash Windows Require a FENSA Certificate?

Sash windows require a FENSA certificate when installed as replacement windows or doors in a home.

New window or door installations on your property will require a FENSA certificate. You cannot sell your home if the relevant new installations are not covered by a FENSA certificate or an equally valid certificate of compliance.

SashWise operates under the regulation of the Federation Self-Assessment Scheme (FENSA) this means that all of our new windows comply with current thermal regulations and you will receive a FENSA certificate directly from FENSA once the work is completed.

If we install new sash boxes with new double-glazed sashes, they will be subject to FENSA regulations and therefore you will receive a FENSA certificate directly from FENSA once the work is completed. More 👉 https://sashwindowrefurbish.co.uk/do-sash-windows-require-fensa/

How Do Sash Windows Work?

Sash windows work on a pulley and weight system that allows the window sashes to slide up and down vertically.

The key components are:
Two sashes (top and bottom) that slide vertically within the window frame
Sash cords that connect the sashes to counterweight(s) inside the frame

Pulley wheels at the top of the frame that the sash cords run over
Counterweights (made of lead, steel or cast iron) that balance the weight of the sashes

When a sash is opened, the counterweight on that side moves down, counterbalancing the sash and allowing it to slide up and down smoothly.

In more modern sash windows, the traditional weight and pulley system has been replaced by spiral balances - spring-loaded devices that perform the same counterbalancing function.

Additional features like sash locks, parting beads, and meeting rails help secure the sashes and prevent drafts.

Proper installation by professionals is crucial for sash windows to function effectively and provide the benefits of ventilation, energy efficiency, and traditional aesthetics.

How to Repair Sash Windows with Springs?

To repair sash windows with springs, follow these steps:
Carefully remove the sash window from the frame, ensuring not damaged when doing the removal.

There will always be the usual position where the access points and a screwdriver is put in use during the removal of screws or fasteners that may be holding the sashes in place. Set aside the sash once removed and place it on one side.

Examine the spring mechanism for any damaged or worn parts. If broken springs are evident or springs with little tension exist, replace them. Old springs can be taken from the sash by grasping them with pliers or wire cutters.

Renew the old springs by following the manufacturer's instructions, which should be installed in a tight fit and give the necessary tension to support the weight of the sash.

Ensure the well is set back into position if removed, and align it with the window frame. All screws or fasteners that were removed should be attached in securing the position. Test by opening and closing the window to check if it works smoothly and uniformly.

Spring-sash window should be kept constantly clean, and all its parts timely checked for wear; all defects should be removed immediately. In case of complicated failures or the impossibility of repairing it by hand, refer for service to a professional specializing in repairing a sash window.

Are Sash Windows Safe?

The sash windows are safe only if all safety is considered in the house with children. Let's look at critical issues:

For the most part, sash windows offer all the security of any other window, if not more. This largely boils down to the fact that they come fitted with both sash stops and locks that make it impossible for the window to be opened too far and allow parents to keep children safe.

Further adding to child safety, one can also use safety restrictors that will allow a limited extent of the window's opening, usually up to about 10cm. These are installed at a place where the children's reach is not possible.

Another way is by the use of window safety guards. These make a physical obstruction for children from having access to the window. These can be unlocked for the scenario where access to the window is needed.

It's also important to keep furniture a distance from windows to keep the children from getting a climb up and open only the top sash if it's double-hung, rather than the bottom.

Sash Windows vs Casement

Sash windows and casement windows have distinct differences that set them apart. Sash windows feature vertically sliding panels or "sashes" that move up and down in the frame, limiting ventilation to the top portion of the window when open.

On the other hand, casement windows are hinged on one side, opening outward for maximum ventilation and unobstructed views. Casements excel at ventilation, security with multi-point locks, and energy efficiency due to their tight closure.

In contrast, sash windows offer a traditional aesthetic with smaller divided panes and visible counterweights, maintaining architectural integrity in historical buildings.

Ultimately, the choice between sash and casement windows depends on preferences for aesthetics, ventilation needs, and operational style. More 👇https://sashwindowrefurbish.co.uk/sash-windows-vs-casement/

How To Open a Stuck Sash Window?

A sash window can become stuck due to various reasons, such as a broken sash cord causing the window to twist within the frame, detached weights leading to the sash cord jamming, joints in the sash opening up making the window too big for the frame, or excessive layers of paint causing the window to bind.

To address a stuck sash window, different solutions are available depending on the specific issue. For instance, if a sash cord has broken, cutting the cord close to the sash and seeking professional repair may be necessary.

If excessive paint is the problem, lubricating the wooden frame with silicone spray can help. In cases where joints have failed or other complex issues arise, it is advisable to consult a professional window specialist for proper repair.

Why Sash Windows Not Staying Up?

To address the issue of sash windows not staying up, there are several common reasons and solutions:

Reasons for Windows Not Staying Up:

Detached Balances: One common reason is that the balances of the window have become detached from the sash, making the window fall.

Imbalanced Weights: If the sash window is heavier than the weights or if the weights are not balanced properly, the window won't stay open.

Faulty Components: Issues like broken sash cords, warped pivot bars, or damaged shoes can also prevent windows from staying up.

Solutions to Fix Sash Windows:

Replace Pivot Bar: If the pivot bar is snapped or bent, replacing it can help secure the window in place.

Inspect and Replace Balances: Check the shoes and balances of the window frame for damage. Replace any broken balances to ensure proper function.

Address Faulty Components: Identify and replace any faulty components like pivot bars, shoes, or weights to restore the window's functionality.

Preventive Measures:

Regular maintenance and inspection of sash windows can help prevent issues like detached balances, broken cords, or misaligned components.
Cleaning window tracks to remove debris can ensure smooth movement and prevent obstructions that hinder window operation.

If these troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue with your sash windows not staying up, it may be necessary to seek professional assistance for further evaluation and repair.
