✨Portrait✨

I'm not sure if this means of me or my macrame 😅 well I'll give you both.. me and the first wall hanging I ever made.. it's for my mamma (when I can snuggle it back to Canada.. one day I hope)! Well this is a short one & I know I'm very behind on March Meet the Maker, but my day job is sucking so much out of me and my time so I'm very sorry I have nothing new completed yet to reveal (have a few things on the go & I'm hoping I can finish them all and show them off this weekend 🤞)!

Does anyone else wish there were more hours in the day? Or that you could clone yourself, one of you to do the tedious boring things and the other one for the fun creative things?! This is my recurring unrealistic wish hehe

✨Small detail✨

I love anything that isn't super repetitive, perhaps why I'm terrible at making the same thing twice or sticking to my plan. For example, things like coasters I find a bit dull because they are one shape or two (circle and square) and utilise just one knot in the same direction and I don't find it a creative enough process to be enjoyable. Whereas my other projects, even leaves which you could argue are repetitive, to me are not, and are much more interesting to create as each wall hanging is unique just like each leaf is.. and I always go rogue and change my mind on what I'm going to do numerous times. So for me, I love the small, ever changing details of my wall hangings, plant hangers, rainbows and leaves.

Regarding the details of the details, I am working hard on knot consistency. I think where I struggle the most is when the knot changes direction as my left and right arms move differently to achieve the same knot and I feel this is subconscious because I've yet to figure out what I'm doing differently. For example when I do reverse clove hitch knots going right to left my tension gets much tighter and twisted which make for a less pretty reverse RCH knot... So this is a detail I've noticed I need to work on.

What do details mean to you? What are you favourite details? Is it knots, patterns, colours...? Thanks for taking part!

✨Learning curve✨

I started my macrame journey November 2020, so not very long ago. I have two books that taught me the basic knots and some patterns, I prefer books because I can scribble in them and make notes.

My first project was a plant hanger and as it consisted of SKs and CKs it wasn't super difficult and doesn't look all that different from my more recent makes.

I think my biggest learning curve has been in designing unique original designs (I know things like rainbows, coasters, etc are not usually that unique) but, I think my wall hangings, plant hangers and key chains are and becoming more so me. It was learning how to get my ideas in my head down on paper then to draft a "pattern" (calculate the measurements etc) so that I could actually make the piece in real life and not run out of cord or have way too much left (usually my problem) has been my biggest and ongoing learning curve.

Also the business side!! I've become very good at Spreadsheets so far in 2021! Both in my day job (who knew nursing would involve Spreadsheets) and macrame. I've also l learned that you need to invest loads and it may be ages before you break even 😅 patience patience... Atm I'm trying to just focus on creating again and not so much the selling and I'm hoping that'll just pick up naturally.

What have been your biggest learning curves? Any inspiring stories!?

✨Work in Progress✨

I'm currently making scrap leaves and a new detailed medium modern wall hanging, which I sketched out and of course in true Alex fashion it's changed entirely from what I've drawn and I'm now winging it!

I'm enjoying the process so much though, so I don't mind... I'm just stuck on how I'll finish it and undecided whether I'll add my scrap leaves or not 🤷🏼‍♀️

✨On Your Desk✨
I don't have a 'desk' but I have my clothing come macrame rack and the lower end of my plant/ book shelf for my cotton. A reed basket for sticks & dowels. Living in London in a small 1 bedroom flat I don't have the luxury of a dedicated area to create my macrame... I move about the flat and make it wherever my bf happens to not be sitting 😂 Hopefully one day this will change. (Does anyone know how to come across a large enough sum of money to buy in London, a two bed to be exact!?)

Hello everyone, just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has purchased something from Aurelia Knots Macrame and for everyone who has shared, supported and liked my page 🥰♥️🤗 it really means the world to me & means i can keep creating and making new projects! Yipee!
Also, just a friendly reminder that if you are looking to purchase something you can message me directly on here or on my instagram. I have some ready made pieces and I'm also able to do custom pieces from large wall hangings right down to little keychain/ bag charms. (I will eventually get around to making an Etsy, perhaps when I have some annual leave from the other day job hehe).

✨Beliefs and Values✨
I'm very passionate about the environment & climate change (highly recommend everyone listens to the 'Drilled' podcast about this and 'How to Save a Planet'. I only purchase recycled cotton from local UK suppliers. At the moment I am up cycling packaging using cardboard boxes I have from moves and deliveries. I use only paper tape and natural products to cushion orders. The few orders you may have received with bubble wrap have been up cycled and I've not purchased this outrightly, nor do I ever plan to. Therefore if you ever receive an order from me that comes in a strange branded box that isn't my label you'll know why. (I often go fishing in the recycling areas too.. loads of perfectly good cardboard!) I kindly ask that all my packaging is then recycled or up cycled too. ♻️
I also am very passionate about the arts, whether that be performing arts or painting, fibre and anything and everything in between. I think the arts are severely underfunded and undervalued by governments and corporations. Therefore I encourage everyone to indulge in and embrace the arts, whether that be going to see a live performance (when these are back on again) or purchasing a piece of jewellery, a painting, macrame, clothing piece etc. from a small handmade business/ artist/ performer/ crafter & paying a fair price for this. I think our world would be a sad, dark and dull place without this vital enrichment. 💃🎨
