The words “natural” and “non toxic” come up a lot when people talk about candles.

Most of the time, they’re used with good intentions. But without a bit more context, they can be confusing and sometimes misleading.

Using plant based wax alone doesn’t automatically make a candle non toxic. Any scented candle involves heat, fragrance, and combustion, which means there is always some level of exposure.

That doesn’t mean candles are bad or something to fear. It just means the language around “natural candles” and “non toxic candles” is often used too loosely.

I’ve written a new blog post breaking down what “natural” really means in candles, why these terms can be misleading without context, and what actually matters when a candle burns in a real home.

This is the first in a short series sharing honest, experience led truths from the candle making side of things, without greenwashing and without scare tactics.
