Autumn is my favourite time of the year - it's not fully dark yet but it's getting cosy. (Ignoring the 20c and full sunshine at the mo). I love the light, but I love the cosy too - and I think we're there. It's candle season, officially.

I didn’t know the word for it until a few years ago. Petrichor. The smell of rain on dry ground, named in 1964 because everyone already knew the smell and just didn’t have a word for it.

Turns out it’s not even the rain you’re smelling. It’s a bubble. Sounds made up, but it isn’t: when a raindrop hits dry soil, it traps a bit of air, that escapes as a tiny bubble, and when it bursts it flings the smell straight up at you.

The smell itself comes from microbes, living in the soil, quietly making geosmin whether it rains or not. Same compound behind a mushroom pulled straight from the ground, if you’re wondering why that’s familiar. It’s about as elemental as a smell gets.

It’s still pretty niche in perfumery, but growing - and it lives in our candle Space.

As a British brand, we’d say we know a thing or two about rain. But Space isn’t an ode to the great British weather - it was created to capture the raw, expansive feeling you get just after the rain (with no umbrella required).

No single wax does everything well. Soy is renewable but soft. Coconut throws scent but won’t hold its shape. So we blend four - soy (certified sustainable), rapeseed, coconut, ethically harvested beeswax - each doing the one thing it’s actually good at.
