Enhancing Space Perception with Wide Flooring Planks 👀

Wide flooring planks can create the illusion of a larger area by minimizing the number of joints on the floor. With fewer seams, visual clutter is reduced, allowing the eye to glide smoothly across the surface. This effect contributes to a feeling of expansiveness, airiness, and cohesion within the room.

The Psychology Behind This Design Choice 🧠

The effectiveness of this design strategy hinges on our brain's perception of scale and visual noise:
Less Visual Clutter: Narrow planks (ranging from 2 to 3 inches) necessitate numerous joint lines. In smaller spaces, these frequent seams can create a busy appearance, making the room feel more confined or "cluttered."
Continuous Visual Flow: Wide planks (typically 6 or 7 inches and above) cover more area with each board. This results in a smoother, more unified canvas that visually "stretches" the room and allows the natural grain to be more pronounced.

Tips to Maximize the Effect ✅

Orientation: For optimal results, lay wide planks parallel to your longest wall. This technique draws the eye lengthwise through the space, creating an illusion of elongation.
Color Selection: Using lighter or natural finishes on wide planks can enhance brightness in the area, further amplifying that open and airy feel.
Consistency: Installing the same wide-plank flooring continuously throughout adjoining rooms and hallways helps avoid choppy transitions, which can make smaller homes feel compartmentalized.

Subfloor preparation is crucial for successful flooring installation, ensuring durability and performance while preventing issues like squeaks and gaps. Key steps include:

🧹Debris Removal: Clear old materials and vacuum for a clean surface.

🛠️Structural Inspection and Repair: Secure loose panels and replace damaged sections.

📏Leveling: Use a straight edge to identify dips and high spots; fill low spots and grind high spots for a flat subfloor.

💦Moisture Testing: Check moisture levels to prevent warping and adhesive failure; use a v***r barrier if necessary.

📋Final Preparation: Acclimate the flooring and install suitable underlayment to enhance performance.

✅Following these steps ensures a lasting and visually appealing flooring installation.

How to Measure Stairs for Carpet and Underlay 📏✂️

To accurately measure stairs for carpet and underlay, follow these steps:

Measure Tread and Riser: Start by measuring the depth of one tread (the flat part) and the height of one riser (the vertical part). Add approximately 5 cm (2 inches) for fitting, then multiply this total by the number of steps.
Measure Width: Measure the width of the steps and include an additional 5 cm for trimming. Remember to count and measure winders separately.

Key Measuring Steps

Measure Tread + Riser: Measure from the back of the tread, over the nose (edge), to the base of the riser below.
Add Allowance: Include roughly 5 cm in your measurement to ensure there's enough material to tuck under the nose and into the corners.
Multiply by Steps: Multiply this total measurement by the number of steps in your staircase.
Measure Width: Measure the width of the steps, adding 5 to 10 cm for trimming.
Winders (Turned Stairs): Measure winding or corner stairs individually, as their sizes vary.

Cutting Scotia Beading (Scotia Molding) ✂️

Cutting scotia beading is most effectively achieved with a mitre box and a fine-toothed saw or hand mitre saw to create 45-degree angles. When positioning the bead in the box, ensure it lies flat on the base with the back pressed against the wall. Apply adhesive solely to the skirting board, avoiding the floor to accommodate floor expansion.

Essential Tools 🪚

Mitre box and fine-toothed saw
Tape measure and pencil
Adhesive or nails
Sandpaper or block plane (for adjustments)

How to Cut Internal Corners (45° Miter)

Measure: Measure the length of your wall and mark it on the back of the scotia.
Position: Place the scotia in the mitre box, ensuring the curve faces inward and the flat back is against the side of the box.
Cut (Left Side): Cut at a 45° angle, leaning from right to left.
Cut (Right Side): Cut the adjoining piece with an opposing 45° angle, leaning from left to right.
Refine: Sand down the angled ends for a seamless fit. If a gap remains, use a Stanley knife to shave the back of the bevel.

How to Cut External Corners (45° Miter)

Measure: Mark the length where the back of the bead meets the corner.
Cut: Cut at a 45° angle in the opposite direction of an internal corner cut, ensuring the longest point of the bevel is at the front.

Pro Tips for Easy Installation 🌟

Adhesive over Nails: Always apply adhesive to the skirting board only. Avoid gluing or nailing the scotia to the flooring to prevent expansion issues that could lead to warping.
Scarf Joint: For two pieces meeting on a long wall, cut a 45-degree angle on both pieces so they overlap rather than making a straight 90-degree cut, rendering the joint less visible.
Ends: For exposed ends (e.g., at doorways), incorporate a "return" (a small 45° return piece) or taper the edge back to the wall.
Finishing: Use decorator's caulk to fill gaps in corners for a flawless finish.

😵‍💫 POV: You opted for inexpensive underlay to save some cash, but now each step in your living room resembles walking on bubble wrap, and you can feel the concrete subfloor beneath the carpet.

Choosing inexpensive underlay can lead to discomfort and issues in the long run. Initially, it feels like a win with low costs and easy installation, but after a month, problems arise:

Crunching Sound: Foam or thin fiberboard compresses and creates annoying noises. 💥
Flattened Areas: Padding disappears, leaving you walking on a thin layer over concrete. 😲
Cold Floors: Cheap foam lacks insulation, exposing you to cold surfaces. 🥶
Creaking: Underlay fails to smooth the subfloor, causing floorboards to lift and creak. 👟
Shifting Carpet: Lightweight underlay moves, leading to bunching. 〰️

Investing in higher-quality materials, like high-density PU foam or 5mm wood fiber panels, is advisable for better support and durability, as cheap options often lead to replacements within a year.

For landlords, the best flooring options are durable, low-maintenance, and easy to replace. Top choices include:

Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT): Highly water-resistant, visually appealing, and easy to install.
Laminate Flooring: Economical and scratch-resistant, suitable for living areas and bedrooms.
Vinyl Sheets/Rolls: Perfect for kitchens and bathrooms due to moisture resistance.
Polypropylene Carpet: Budget-friendly and comfortable for bedrooms.
Engineered Wood: Premium option for select tenancies but more expensive.

Usage Recommendations:

Kitchens & Bathrooms: Use vinyl sheets or LVT for water protection.
Living Rooms & High-Traffic Areas: Opt for LVT or durable laminate.
Bedrooms: Choose neutral-toned carpets or laminate.
Replacement and Maintenance:
Utilize click-lock systems for easy plank replacement.
Maintain flooring with pads under furniture, regular sweeping, and minimal water during cleaning.

Key Considerations:

LVT is preferred for its durability and ease of replacement.
Consider cost versus longevity; premium options may be a better investment.

The Importance of a Vapour Barrier or Damp Proof Membrane (DPM)

When installing new flooring over concrete, especially in basements or on ground floors, using a vapour barrier or DPM is essential to prevent moisture issues like rot and mold. This is particularly crucial for floating wood and laminate floors if moisture levels surpass 2%.

When to Use a DPM/Vapour Barrier:

Concrete Subfloors: Always required, as concrete emits moisture.
Below Grade/Basements: Necessary due to high moisture risk.
Engineered or Laminate Flooring: Prevents warping or cupping in floating installations.
Ground Floor Applications: Stops rising damp.
High Humidity Areas: Important in kitchens and bathrooms.

Types of Moisture Protection:

Damp Proof Membrane (DPM): A plastic sheet or liquid coating that blocks liquid water and v***r.
Vapour Barrier: Often a 6-mil polyethylene film that prevents moisture v***r migration.

Key Considerations:

Conduct a concrete moisture test; a DPM is needed if levels exceed 2%.
Wood subfloors usually don’t need a DPM to avoid trapping moisture.
Use underlayment with an integrated DPM for laminate.
Ensure all joints in the vapour barrier or DPM are taped for a complete seal.
